Omelegg was one of the first places in Amsterdam to focus on breakfast and brunch and their omelettes have been attracting crowds ever since. They opened their first branch in De Pijp but have since expanded to a location right in the heart of the Red Light District. They even have one in Berlin! As the name suggests, eggs are the order of the day (and the breakfast menu is all day) and their omelettes are particularly popular.

Rum Baba in the trendy East district serves some of the best pastries and cakes in the capital. Stop by early in the morning for a slice of their health-conscious banana loaf and one of their coffees. They also sell a selection of home-baked energy bars which are perfect for stashing in your bag for when you start to lag later.

Vinnie’s put emphasis on good, home cooked food and they open at 7.30am on weekdays so you can get some of that goodness for breakfast. We particularly love the pastries here. They also serve one of the best coffees in Amsterdam so make sure you stop by one of their branches on Haarlemmerstraat or in De Pijp for a bite to eat and a brew.

When you think of Dutch cuisine, it’s quite likely you think of pancakes so we couldn’t write this list without including one of Amsterdam’s best pancake houses. Pancakes has four branches in the city including in the picturesque Nine Streets and across the IJ at the new Amsterdam Tower. This is a tourist favourite so you might have to queue, but it’s so worth it. They serve fluffy, thick American pancakes as well as the thinner traditional Dutch variety. Classic fillings like ham and cheese will always go down well.

We have already mentioned Coffee and Coconuts because it serves one of the best brunches in Amsterdam but it’s also a delicious place to stop for breakfast. The hotspot in De Pijp is full of local hipsters tapping away on laptops or having morning meetings. The old theatre is decked out like a Californian eatery and the atmosphere is laidback. Order a smoothie bowl or their avocado on toast.

Did you know that the Dutch eat more yoghurt per person than any other country in the world? Yoghurt Barn saw a gap in the market and seized it with this chain of yoghurt cafes. You can make it yourself, choosing toppings from an extensive list or go for one of their specials. They even serve yoghurt on toast. Yes, you read that right. Crispy sourdough toast is spread with creamy ricotta yoghurt and you know what? It’s absolutely delicious.

Most of the dishes served at Lavinia are vegetarian or vegan so it’s the perfect place to head if you have specific dietary requirements. Their banana pancakes are particularly delicious and all their juices and smoothies are nice too. Stop by the cafe in the city centre before a day of sightseeing.

If you like to start the day on a very healthy note, then The Cold Pressed Juicery will tick all your boxes. Raw, organic and oh-so-saintly, they make all of their juices fresh every day so you know you’re drinking the best. They have four shops in Amsterdam, a few of them with space to drink in store or you can grab your juice (or shot or smoothie) and drink it on the go. If you’re in need of a detox they also offer a juice cleanse program that features all sorts of ingredients like activated charcoal and turmeric.

This chain of bakeries is the perfect place to stock up on carbs before a day of cycling around the city. Our favourite branch is the one in Westerpark which has a nice outdoor area that’s perfect in the summer. Choose a breakfast sandwich, a buttery pastry or do as the Dutch do and have a slice of their famous apple pie.

Stach is a chain of cafe/shop hybrids dotted around the city. And we are obsessed. They serve the best croissants in the city (in our very humble opinion) and bake them fresh every morning so they’re often still warm. They also sell healthy yoghurt pots, freshly squeezed juices and delicious coffee. Some of the bigger branches have seating areas and a fully functioning kitchen so you can order something more substantial.

The dutch have a word for cozy surroundings ‘gezelligheid’ and Piqniq could certainly be described as gezelligheid. In the famous Nine Streets district the cafe serves a range of different continental breakfasts and pastries. You can also choose the American version of any breakfast which simply comes with an added donut.
