Not many beaches pack such an aesthetic punch as Red Sand Beach. This other-worldly cove looks like it could be on Mars with red pebbly sand and red cliffs contrasting with the stunning blue sea. Even if you don’t make the walk down on to the beach (the path is uneven and can be crumbly), make sure to journey here just to view it from above. It truly is one of the most visually arresting sights in all of Greece.

Perissa is probably the busiest and most popular beach in Santorini with a huge range of bars and restaurants catering to the young and trendy crowd. Like most of the island, the sand here is black because of the island's volcanic origins, so gets very hot under the feet in summer. You’ll also find all the water sports you can think of here, from waterskiing to wind surfing so it’s ideal for keeping little ones busy.

The unique rock formations that surround Vlychada beach are the main draw here, towering up from the sand and making for an impressive sight. At one end there is a small port where fishing boats moor in the summer and at the other end there is a small number of sun loungers and umbrellas to keep you comfortable in the sun.

This beach is close to the airport and nearby to much of the accommodation on the island. That makes it popular with families who love the ease of spending the day here. There is a variety of restaurants and bars here to pick up a spot of lunch, and it’s easily accessible by both private car and public transport. It’s a must visit on your vacation in Santorini.

Cape Columbo is one of the most secluded beaches on the island making it a popular spot for nudists and anyone after a little more privacy. The long stretch of pebble beach is home to a few cafes and restaurants although you can never guarantee that they’ll be open. It can get windy here so there are sometimes some waves crashing on the beach. It’s these waves that have given the surrounding cliffs their impressive shapes.

If you’re travelling with little ones then this is probably the best beach in Santorini for you. The long and wide beach has the softest and finest sand on the island which is otherwise mainly surrounded by rocks and pebbles. Soak up the sun in one of the beach-front restaurants while you tuck into the catch of the day.

Vourvoulos isn’t on the usual tourist trail so you might have it to yourself, but don’t go here if you’re hoping to swim. The strong winds that batter the beach bring in big waves making it a not so friendly swimming spot.
