Washington D.C. practically made up of museums! As one of the most historic cities in all of the USA, it should come as no surprise that museums are a dime a dozen here. Though make no mistake: these museums aren't boring! In fact, they're as entertaining as they educational. You won't just learn a lot, but you'll also revel in the history, heritage, and culture of this powerhouse country. Unfortunately, however, you can't travel to Washington D.C. to go see them right now because of the pandemic. So instead, take a virtual museum tour of the city online!

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Though most of the Smithsonian Institue's museums are exciting, the National Museum of Natural History is one grand place that's really worthwhile. And it's just as mindblowing online as it is in real life! Think realistic animal dioramas, in-depth look at various plants, and blow-by-blow retelling of the planet's history. Plus, it has a ton of hidden gems as well. One such (that's not so hidden!) is the iconic 'Hope Diamond.' Allegedly cursed, it gained even more notoriety when it was slightly referenced in the 1997 blockbuster hit, 'Titanic.' You can see all of that and more on the museum's digital platform!

National Museum of African American History and Culture

As the social movement #BlackLivesMatter becomes more and more important these days, it's nice to take a step back and realize just how important the African-American community is in the history of America and the world. Fortunately, all of the community's achievements, hardships, and glory are detailed in the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Located along Constitution Ave., it's pretty easy to get to via public transport. But online, you can simply log into its online learning lab and study everything you need to (and ought to) know about the African-American community!

National Portrait Gallery

The history of the United States of America is so complex, colorful, tumultuous, eventful, and more that you probably don't know all of the important people that made an impact. That's fine! Not even the country's best schools can teach about all of them. However, you can discover a good many of them in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. From the founding fathers to the past presidents, political revolutionaries & iconic celebrities, the most prominent and important people in US history are immortalized here. And on the museum's website, you can peruse through all their portraits in an instant!

National Museum of Women in the Arts

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that women are criminally underappreciated in the US. They have yet to even elect their first female president or vice-president, even though many eligible women have run for office. Still, if it's any consolation, the National Museum of Women in the Arts is a mecca of achievements by the fairer sex. From the distinct works of Frida Kahlo to the photographs of Nikki S. Lee, some of the artistic milestones of women are highlighted and celebrated here. And if you log into the museum's website you can see these amazing pieces as well as their current exhibitions!

Ford's Theatre

Did you know that the Ford Theatre, the very place where Abraham Lincoln was shot, is still standing? Moreover, did you know that it's become a museum of sorts now? Though it's still structured as a theater, it doesn't operate as one anymore. Instead, this is where various Lincoln-era relics and memorabilia are displayed, including the actual gun that John Wilkes Booth used to assassinate the historic president. Though it's not the same as actually visiting the theater and being in the exact same spot where one of the most infamous incidents in US history happened, seeing the theater online through its virtual tour is just as riveting.

The Phillips Collection

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. These are just some of the many historical artists whose works you can find in The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. Moving to this city means you'll see more museums than you care to visit in your lifetime but at least there are some that offer such beauty like this one. These iconic pieces are part of Duncan Phillips' world-renowned collection. He's credited as having introduced modern art to America. And judging by the historic artworks you'll see here, both in-person and online, he achieved quite a collection indeed!
