Ultimate Crete Guide by Neighborhood

It shouldn't really surprise anyone why Greece is such a popular destination. Whether's tourists visiting or people relocating, there's a lot to love about this Mediterranean paradise. Not the least of which are its many islands. While there are countless tropical escapes in Southeast Asia, Central & Southeast America, and more, there aren't any that can compare to the likes of the Greek Islands. One of which is Crete. Sure, it's not as popular as Mykonos or Santorini, by Crete has its own aces up its sleeve. Just take a look at its beautiful neighborhoods!

Agios Nikolaos

Arguably the most important thing about Agios Nikolaos is the sea. The place borders the Aegean Sea, one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world. And since 'Agios Nikolaos' literally translates to 'Saint Nicolas' (also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker), the patron saint of sailors, it's not that hard to understand why. The area is truly a paradise, what with its stunning shoreline, beautiful flora, and slightly untouched corners. Though there are a few hotels here, it's not as commercialized as the other parts of the island! And in a place like Crete, that makes it all the more wonderful!

Chania

In complete contrast, Chania, on the other hand, is just about the most tourist-friendly district on this list. Regarded as one of the oldest towns, not just in Greece, but in the entire world, its centuries-old charms continue to fascinate and enchant people to this very day. Unlike other places, Chania is more complete in activities that aren't so directly linked to the sea. Visiting museums and playing sports in fitness clubs are just some of them. Notably, the harbor area is a particularly popular site. Lined with taverns, restaurants, cafes—the likes of which can rival those in Cannes!—settling down here is the perfect place to watch the sun go down.

Elounda

While Crete is far from the likes of St. Tropez, the upscale district Elounda is surely close enough! What was once a humble fishing village has since become a playground for the rich and famous. Multiple resorts and hotels have set up here, as well as a good many nightclubs, bars, and other nightlife spots to keep the party going until after sundown! And if that's not enough, the area has also become the most fashionable part of Crete. The island may be far from the likes of Paris and Milan, Elounda is surely on its way to catch up!

Heraklion

With a large airport and a port by the sea, Heraklion is one of the more important neighborhoods in Crete. In many ways, it is the capital of the island, especially since it's the most common port of entry for people coming from the outside. And as the capital, it's also arguably the most urban part of Crete as well. To say that there are a ton of things to do here is an understatement. You can go to archaeological sites, relax in a vineyard, enjoy nightlife after dark, and so on! Just hope your stay has enough days to it so you can do them all!

Hersonissos

For many people, both residents and tourists alike, the seaside town of Hersonissos is the friendliest to families. The beach alone will have the little ones all full of glee, what with the countless activities in store here. A myriad of after sports await your children, and with the stunning Mediterranean sea at hand, you know they'll enjoy their time to the fullest. But spending time at the beach isn't the only way to have fun here. There's also an aquarium, playgrounds, and more to ensure that families have the best time here!

Lasithi

'Relaxing' is what many would describe the quaint town of Lassithi in Crete. As it is one of the busier islands in Greece, the many neighborhoods here are mostly big and busy. But not Lassithi! It's a lot smaller than its neighboring districts, making it a suitable residential area for locals and expats who want to move in. The latter don't have anything to worry about either! There are plenty of luxury apartments, big homes, and more to ensure that they can live comfortable lives here. And, ultimately, relax to the fullest as well!

Malia

Partying on a Greek Island doesn't only pertain to the likes of Mykonos and Corfu. Crete has its own central nightlife hub that's just as fun, wild, and exciting! In the beautiful district of Malia, partying reigns supreme! A whole series of nightclubs, bars, and other establishments await the party animals on the island. Some are, as you'd expect pretty wild, loud, and raunchy. But there are a few others that are chill and more relaxing as well. Out of all the places on the island, this is the best spot for young travelers looking to have a good time!

Rethymnon

Apart from relaxing in the Mediterranean, a lot of people go to Greece because of the rich history of the country. One of the best places for that is on the Greek Island of Crete. More specifically, the beautiful neighborhood of Rethymno. A stunning coastal town that's just as paradise-like as the rest of them, this place is full of history just waiting to be explored. Think archeological sites that'd make even Indiana Jones green with envy. Or old structures and ruins dating all the way back to Ancient Greece!

Sitia

Sitia is, undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful parts of Crete. A quintessential Mediterranean coastal town, it's the type of place that artists would just love to draw and paint. And in fact, you'll see a ton of them doing just that right here. The flora and fauna are already rich and plentiful in this part of the island, but the charming town just makes the scene even more breathtaking. Add to that the relaxing vibe this whole area evokes—that's a sure winner right there! As it's one of the least busy neighborhoods on the island, it's perfect for honeymooning couples and, of course, artists too!
