Mother's Day is just around the corner! Do you know what you're gonna get your mom yet? Have you bought her a present already? What are you going to make for her on that day? There's always that added pressure when it comes to Mother's Day because you're dealing with a woman who knows practically everything about you. She brought you to this Earth, raised you, and took care of you. How will you ever be able to repay her especially on Mother's Day? Well, you can always do it the way the Belgians do! Here's what you need to know about that!
Ask Your Dad To Give Her Something
As far as traditions go,
Belgian customs are some of the most unique in the world. And when it comes to Mother's Day, it's actually up to the dad to start it off! While Belgians aren't known to be family-oriented, they are. And every Mother's Day, it's become common for the dad to take the initiative while she gets to rest and relax. It's the dad who prepares breakfast, gets the kids ready, makes (or pays for) lunch, and, of course, gives her presents. It's sort of anti-climactic on your part since you're the child but let your old mad do what he needs to do! Your mom will still love it nonetheless!

Serve Her Breakfast in Bed
If you want to help your dad start the day off, assist in preparing your mom's breakfast in bed! Yep, this tradition is widely followed in Belgium on Mother's Day. After all, when you were growing up, wasn't your mom the one who wakes up early in the morning and prepares breakfast for everybody else? Preparing her breakfast and letting her eat it in the comforts of her own bed is the least you can do for all the effort she exerted in the past! Moreover, she'd be so delighted waking up and having a feast right before her eyes!

Don't Forget The Flowers
Either your dad gets them, you get them, or you both get them! Either way, you shouldn't forget to give your mom some flowers on Mother's Day. It's not that it's a Belgian tradition, per se, but it is common here! Most especially since spring in Belgium,
especially in Brussels, brings about so many freshly bloomed flora! The entire Belgian capital practically turns into one big flower market when spring arrives! It'd be a waste not to give her a bouquet with so many sweet-smelling flowers all around! But whether you're in Belgium or not, giving flowers to your mom on this special day is practically a given!

Give Her Belgian Chocolate
Belgium is known for its chocolate. While there are some great
chocolatiers in Paris, Rome, and other major cities, here in Belgium, it's somewhat of a national treat. It's one of the country's biggest industries contributing a lot to the national economy. And, of course, it tastes so good! So on Mother's Day, so many Belgians give their moms boxes of chocolates, you'd think it was Valentine's Day all over again! Since Belgian chocolate is somewhat of a luxury, it will also convey just how special you think your mom is! That's the best part!

Make Something Handmade
Another nationwide tradition in Belgium is making something handmade for mothers. Days and weeks before Mother's Day, schools and daycare centers would ask their students to make something for their moms for that special day. And who says you can't continue it when you've all grown up? A card you made yourself will likely have the same effect now as it did when you were little. You can also prepare a feast for your mom on Mother's Day too, letting her rest and relax on her special day instead! The possibilities are endless on what you can do for your mom!

Learn A Language Together
For many people, Mother's Day is a day to bond with the woman you gave birth to you, raised you, and taught you a lot about life. Here in Belgium, since the country is made up of different regions and communities, there isn't exactly one national language. That's why it's common for them to spend Mother's Day learning languages. Be it Flemish,
French, German, and more, learning how to speak and understand a new language with your mom is a great way to spend time and bond with her! Don't worry, there are a lot of great language schools out there! You can also learn online too!
