More often than not, summer, for a lot of people, means you get to have a lot of free time. The kids are out of school for summer vacation while adults get a few days off to spend time with family and friends. Not to mention the bank holidays too! Here in the UK, getting a lot of free time is common during summer and because of this, many are left wondering what to do? Well, apart from staying cool, why not bake some desserts? You probably didn't know it yet but there are some traditional English desserts that are perfect for summer!
Sherbet
While the Italians call it '
sorbet' and the Puerto Ricans have their own version called the '
piragua,' here in the UK, they call it 'sherbet.' It's just like its Italian and Puerto Rican counterparts: a chilly dessert sweetened by one's chosen flavor. Though if you want to get technical about it, sherbet is in its own category. It's not quite like ice cream,
gelato, or shaved ice. It has its own unique consistency, texture, and flavors that make it uniquely English. And in fact, there's a law that states that sherbet must contain less than 2% fat.

Summer Pudding
It's already in the name! Summer pudding is a delectable dessert that the English often make for the hot season. Though you might get confused since the word for 'dessert' here in the UK is also 'pudding,' this is actually a specific dish. It's made out of sliced bread drenched and then layered with seasonal fruit, typically berries. It rose in popularity in the late 19th century and by the early 20th century, it became a mainstay in British dinner tables throughout the country. What's also great about this dessert is that it makes use of stale bread, allowing you to recycle loaves that you probably can't use for other purposes anymore.

Fruit Tarts
Speaking of fruity desserts, there's also the fruit tarts. Now, there are a ton of reasons as to why fruit tarts make for great summer desserts. Firstly, they are often chilled in refrigerators. Although you bake them, once you get them out of the oven you often immediately let them chill. Very rarely are they served without having chilled in the refrigerator. Secondly, they're perfect for a cup of tea. Since they're smaller than your average cake or pie, they make for great finger treats with a cup of tea. If you go to the
best afternoon tea places in London, you'll find that fruit tarts are commonly among their bestsellers!

English Trifle
Now, if you want to go full-on English, go for an English Trifle! A dessert with layers of custard, fruits, marmalade, cakes, and, of course, topped with light cream. Who wouldn't want to devour a slice when served some? This is the type of traditional dessert served during
holidays and the like! But what makes it in summer? Well, why not? There's no reason not to indulge in a mouthful of English trifle when it's hot outside. And since it's summer, you probably have a lot of free time, don't you? All the more to spend it preparing and enjoying this amazing dessert!

Victoria Sponge Cake
Want another traditional English dessert? Have a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake! Though many have their own takes of this classic treat, it's often just two plump laters of sponge cake with a layer of jam or cream (or both!) in between sprinkled with powdered sugar on top. Relatively simple and easy, right? Well, make no mistake! If you want the perfect Victoria Sponge Cake, you'll have to work on as many times as you can to make it right. It's always the simplest desserts that are the hardest to make, after all! Its lightness and fluffiness make it the perfect treat to enjoy during a hot summer day!
