Kefalonia may not be one of the most popular Greek islands out there, but it's definitely one that many have and continue to visit. It's no surprise, considering the island offers as many natural wonders, relaxing retreats, delicious food, and more that you'd expect from other Greek islands. But how does one get here? Is it easy to travel all the way to Kefalonia? And when you're here, how do you get around? What are your options for traveling throughout the island? Here's what you need to know about traveling to and the public transport in Kefalonia.
Getting to Kefalonia
There really only two ways to get to Kefalonia. The first is to take a plane, which is easier if you're coming from Athens, Corfu, and Zakynthos. Flights that depart from these destinations will land on
Kefalonia International Airport Anna Pollatou, one of the main ports of entry in Kefalonia. Though there are charter flights you can take to get to Kefalonia, even if you're coming from other European countries, they're not as common as the standard flights that come from the different parts of Greece. The other way to get to Kefalonia is, of course, to take a ferry. This is arguably the easier and more affordable option, with lots of ferries departing from mainland Greece and the other islands.
The Island's Public Buses
When you get to Kefalonia yourself, the most common way to get around is to take a bus. The bus company,
Ktel Kefalonia Buses, is in charge of the main public transport system on the island. Its central station is located in Argostoli, the island's capital and many routes travel to all the other
towns in Kefalonia. Ultimately, although there are other options available, the buses have become the most popular among tourists and locals alike. This is mostly because of how convenient and affordable they are. Some even provide tourist guides to help improve your stay in Kefalonia!

Riding A Sea Bus
Don't think that the buses on land are the only way to get around Kefalonia. At least, if you want to get from one side of the island to the other quicker than normal, you can always take a seabus. There are tons that are docked by the harbor of Argostoli and many of them go on day trips to Lixouri, which is on the other side of the island. By bus, getting from starting point to the destination can take hours, possibly even the entire day. But if you take a seabus, the trip only lasts around ten minutes.
Taking a Taxi
It may not seem like it but Kefalonia actually has a ton of taxis. You can hail one off the street if you prefer to get to your destination on your own. Contrary to the buses on the island, which are monopolized by a single company, there are actually a ton of taxi services on offer in Kefalonia. If you find it difficult to hail one off the street, you can always call the company and book a taxi for your convenience. And, of course, there's always the
transportation apps too! Just a few taps and a ride will come straight to your location to take you to where you need to be!
Rent a Vehicle
Now, if you prefer to drive on your own, you can always rent your own vehicle in Kefalonia. You'd be surprised at how many car, motorcycle, and bike rentals there are on the island. If you can afford it, you can rent a vehicle throughout your entire stay. This way, you can travel and explore the island at your own pace and your own time. You won't need to rush to catch the next bus or to try hard to hail a taxi off the street. But remember that renting a vehicle, no matter what it is, will cost a lot of money. Keep that in mind before deciding if you're going to rent one or not.
Getting to and traveling within Kefalonia is no easy task but it's not impossible either. In fact, you might be surprised at how simple it is to get to your destination here and back! Kefalonia is definitely not your ordinary Greek island.
