Does the city of Rome put the 'rom' in romantic? Possibly! It's no secret that the Italian capital is a perfect destination for lovers, those who want to find love, and those who love life in general. No wonder so many people choose this place for their honeymoon despite how busy it is. It's also no surprise that many Hollywood-made romantic comedies, or 'rom-coms,' are set here. The grand monuments, the narrow alleyways, and the bustling way of life all make for great settings for heart-thumping yet hilarious films. And these five very memorable movies stand proof of that!
Roman Holiday (1953)
If there's one quintessential romantic comedy set in Italy, especially in Rome, that most film (and fashion) lovers have watched, it's the 1953 classic, 'Roman Holiday.' Starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, this was one of the first movies that weren't just set in Rome, but really made the Italian capital play a more important role in the film. Hepburn, in her Academy Award-winning performance, stars as Princess Ann, a royal princess who escapes her palace in Rome and stumbles across American reporter, Joe Bradley, played by Peck. Bradley, now with the biggest scoop of his career, takes the princess on a whirlwind tour of the city, visiting all sorts of famous places like the Mouth of Truth in Piazza Bocca della Verità, the Trevi Fountain, and more.

Light in the Piazza (1962)
Starring an ensemble cast led by Olivia de Havilland, Rossano Brazzi, Yvette Mimieux, and George Hamilton, 'Light in the Piazza' is one of the more dramatic rom-coms to make it on this list. The film tells the story of a mother-daughter duo, Meg (played by de Havilland) and Clara (played by Mimieux), during their summer holiday in Italy. While in Florence, Clara, who has a mental disability, meets and falls in love with Fabrizio (played by Hamilton), with the latter thinking that her condition is nothing more than naivete. Meg, fearing that Fabrizio will grow to hate Clara once he discovers the truth about her mental state, moves her holiday to Rome to help her daughter forget about their relationship. But try as she might, love has already made the young couple bound by fate.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)
'Hey now! Hey now! This is what dreams are made of!' If you were a fan of early 2000s Disney movies, you'll know these iconic lyrics from the 2003 teen rom-com, 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie.' Based on the TV series of the same name, the famous awkward yet lovable teen, Lizzie McGuire (played by Hilary Duff) sets off to Rome on a class trip. Whilst there, she catches the eye of Italian pop singer, Paolo Valisari, who tells her she looks like her ex and fellow superstar, Isabella Parigi. Paolo then whisks Lizzie away on a tour of all the districts of Rome, asking her to pretend to be Isabella for a special duet performance that she and the rest of the world will never forget.

Eat, Pray, Love (2010)
As far as inspirational rom-coms go, very few are as popular as the 2010 flick, 'Eat, Pray, Love.' Based on the successful novel of the same name, Julia Roberts stars as Elizabeth Gilbert, a once-successful woman who finds herself stuck at a crossroads after getting divorced. To pick herself back up, she embarks on a world tour where she 'eats' in Italy, 'prays' in India, and finally finds 'love' again in Indonesia. As for her foodie trip in Italy, where she stops by Rome, she famously indulges in gelato and other Italian favorites, further proving the city's role as a 'food capital' in the world.

To Rome with Love (2012)
Trust rom-com maestro Woody Allen to round up an ensemble cast for a hilarious flick set in the beautiful city of Rome. His 2012 film, 'To Rome with Love,' has the likes of Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Judy Davis, and the director himself telling four different love stories set in the Italian capital. All complex and complicated, it explores what many people are like when faced with heated and passionate emotions and how romance really is a driving force in Rome. Nevertheless, amidst all the drama and hilarity, the movie itself is like a modern postcard from Rome,
