Where to Watch a Drag Show in LA

March 22, 2022

'Drag is all over the world. It's a phenomenon! It will live on and on.' Thanks to the hit reality TV competition series, 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' drag has become a huge part of mainstream pop culture. It's no longer the nightlife entertainment spectacle that you only see in bars and nightclubs. Drag is now on TV and drag queens are becoming just as popular as Hollywood celebrities. And it rings true in Tinsel Town itself! As the entertainment capital of the world—as well as the city where the series is shot—Los Angeles offers many drag bars. Many of which feature the same superstar queens who competed in the show.

Where to Watch a Drag Show in LA

The Abbey

West Hollywood is among the most famous neighborhoods in Los Angeles because it's an LGBTQ+ hub in the entertainment capital of the world. And of course, this means that there are many gay and drag bars here that will give you a good show! One of them is The Abbey on N Robertson Boulevard. This legendary gay bar has become one of the go-to LA hotspots for 'Drag Race' fans, especially Tuesday when they host '90s Night' with season 10 alum, Mayhem Miller. Even in the morning, they also put on amazing drag performances to go with brunch!

Hamburger Mary’s

Another legendary WeHo haunt for 'Drag Race' fans is Hamburger Mary's, the iconic drag bar on Santa Monica Boulevard. They commonly feature many queens who've competed on the show, including April Carrion from season 6, Jasmine Masters from season 7, Honey Davenport from season 11, and more. The best part, however, is that they don't just rely on lip-syncs and stand-up comedy performances to, as they say, 'turn the house down boots!' They also host drag bingo, charity events for the LGBTQ+ community, and more!

Micky's WeHo

Micky's WeHo is yet another must-visit gay bar on Santa Monica Boulevard for any 'Drag Race' fan. Particularly on two nights: every Monday and whatever day 'Drag Race' is on. Every Monday, the bar hosts their legendary 'Showgirls' nights featuring iconic queens such as season 2 alums, Raven, Morgan McMichaels, and Pandora Boxx. And when there's a new episode of 'Drag Race,' the entirety of Micky's WeHo turns into one huge viewing party. You get to gag and laugh with the rest of the crew, as well as with a few queens who've been in the show themselves. What's not to love?

Precinct

Located in Downtown LA, Precinct is a gay nightclub that you have to visit when you want to watch a lit nightclub. Featuring a healthy mix of 'Drag Race' and local queens, this place is all about the performances. Lip-syncing is the name of the game here as the queens go all out in giving you an exciting show you will never forget. They, along with the club's sexy gogo dancers, keep the party going up until the wee hours of the night. And during every season of 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' Precinct also hosts weekly viewing parties to make watching the show even more exciting.

Rockwell

While all the other hotspots on this list feature lip-syncing drag queens, Rockwell LA in the Los Feliz neighborhood will have you laughing out loud. 'Drag Race' judge Ross Matthews regularly hosts his 'Dragtastic Bubbly Brunch' improv show here every Saturday, featuring sketches, impersonations, stand-up performances, and more. Though you may have trouble getting here even via public transport, all your efforts would not be in vain. The moment the show starts, your jaw won't leave the floor and your lungs will eventually give out from all the laughing. Pair that with Rockwell's amazing drinks and you've got a great night out!

Los Globos

What Los Globos on Sunset Boulevard offers isn't necessarily a traditional drag show, per se, but rather a fun time with both local and famous drag queens. The nightclub is all about dancing till the sun rises and if you're lucky, you might be shaking your butt with a 'Drag Race' alum. That is if you're not yet drunk enough to let loose and throw all your inhibitions out the window. Their '2000s Night' is always popular since they play some of your favorite hits from the early noughties, specifically those from Britney Speaks, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, and the like.

33 Taps Silver Lake

Admittedly, 33 Taps Silver Lake doesn't look anywhere near like the usual gay/drag bar where queens put on such stellar shows. The place is a sports bar, the kind where they show football and basketball games on TV. However, every Tuesday night, season 3 and All-Stars 5 alum Mariah Paris Balenciaga takes over the entire establishment for her weekly drag bingo. Packed with a lot of laughs and gaggy performances, you'll soon forget that men in jerseys also frequent this Hollywood hotspot on Sunset Boulevard. The 'Drag Race' viewing parties here are also lit so make sure you don't miss that too!
