The recently-concluded Cannes Film Festival 2022 continued the iconic event's tradition of premiering excellent films for the 75th year straight. From riveting dramas to heartwrenching biopics, not to mention some hilarious comedies too, these movies have already gotten a lot of buzz. They'll likely get as much attention come awards season too! And when they finally go out to the public, there's no doubt they'll be box office hits too! But what is it about Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Armageddon Time, and Crimes of the Future that had the audience applauding? Here's what you need to know about them!

The Top Five Most Popular Movies from The Cannes Film Festival 2022

Top Gun: Maverick

There was no doubt that the sequel to the 1986 cult classic, 'Top Gun,' would be one of—if not the most memorable movie of 2022. Even before the Cannes Film Festival this May 2022, 'Top Gun: Maverick' was already one of the most buzzed-about films in the event. And most of it is thanks to the return of actor Tom Cruise in of his most iconic roles, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. This time around, he's joined by a new cast of high-flying freaks. They include Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw and Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson, among many others.

Elvis

Biopics always make for Oscar-worthy films. And it's no secret that many of the movies that have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival have gone unto win big during awards season. So will Baz Luhmann's latest feature, 'Elvis,' follow this tradition? It's highly likely! Following its buzz before the festival, it seems like the movie lived up to its hype. Ever since it premiered at this year's edition, critics haven't stopped praising it. They especially laud lead actor Austin Butler for his performance as the American music icon. Looks like there's a new frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Actor!

Three Thousand Years of Longing

A dark fantasy comedy that stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba? Yes, please! Among the most praised moves at the Cannes Film Festival this year was 'Three Thousand Years of Longing.' It even received a six-minute standing ovation from the audience after its first screening. The movie tells the story of Alithea Binnie (played by Swinton), an academic scholar who's pretty content with her life. Wanting for nothing, she encounters a djinn (played by Elba) who offers up three wishes in exchange for his freedom. After a lengthy conversation in Istanbul, Turkey between a scholar whose all about logic and a magical being who can grant wishes, hilarity ensues!

Armageddon Time

The Cannes Film Festival has always highlighted period dramas and this year is no different. One of the most highly talked about movies in this year's 75th edition was 'Armageddon Time.' Starring the likes of Sir Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, Jessica, Chastain, and Jeremy Strong, its star-power alone was enough to get attention. But its heartwrenching story had audiences and critics alike singing its praises. The film tells the story of a young Jewish boy who befriends an African-American classmate in 1980s Queens, New York. It shows all the racial tension and pressure of living in the US at the time.

Crimes of the Future

And finally, there's 'Crimes of the Future' which stars Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, and Lea Seydoux. A body horror flick that's a remake of the 1970s film of the same name, it riveted audiences all throughout the Cannes Film Festival. Just like 'Three Thousand Years of Longing,' it even received a six-minute standing ovation as well. With scenes too shocking to mention lightly, it's a movie that's not for the faint of heart. Yet, perhaps it's the extreme approach that will captive moviegoers the world over? Only time will tell if audiences out there will appreciate 'Crimes of the Future' just as Cannes did.
