When it comes to choosing the best neighbourhood in Milan, we’re torn, because there are so many fabulous areas. Brera is considered the centre of Milan and is home to top galleries, beautiful buildings and charming cobbled streets.
Centro Storico is home to some of the most luxurious apartments to rent in Milan and is also the location of many of the city’s iconic sights. No visit to Milan would be complete without exploring the area around the iconic Duomo, the world’s largest gothic cathedral. You can spend a weekend here just exploring this area or you can use it as your base and make use of the various metro lines that run through the neighbourhood to explore further afield.
We also love Porta Romana for its elegant architecture and even more elegant residents. This is undoubtedly one of the chicest neighbourhoods in the city, away from the crowds of tourists. For now anyway.
If you’re taking a shopaholic away with you then they’ll be in heaven in Milan. The city is one of the fashion capitals of the world and every high-end designer you can imagine has a store here. But there are also smaller, lesser-known labels that are worth seeking out.
As well as shopping, there is so much art and culture to soak up in the city. Per sure to check out exhibitions that are taking place at the various museums and of course, make a visit to the iconic Duomo. You can spend a day in the surrounding area, just marvelling at the gigantic building and taking in the Italian atmosphere.
Characterised by a distinct, saffron-infused golden hue, risotto alla Milanese might not look like much but it is the signature dish to eat in Milan and will not disappoint. Made with copious amounts of butter and served slightly al dente, this is a rich and decedent dish, just like the city it originates from. But Milan isn’t just about risotto. The city in the north of Italy is also close to the region that produces Parmesan, Parma ham and Ragù alla Bolognese. So you will never go hungry here!
If you want something slightly more conventional, check out one of the best brunches in Milan. Choose one with Bloody Mary’s on the menu for a decedent treat for the one you love.
