Located on the toe part of Italy's “boot,” Sicily is quite far from the rest of the country. To get here, your choices include flying out, boarding a ferry, or perhaps taking the Eurostar train. In any case, you'll need to exert quite an effort to reach the destination. And while it may tire you out, rest assured that it will all be worth it. The traveling part may be fun and all, but the ultimate reward is getting to see such amazing places yourself. And when you reach Sicily, there's no doubt that you'll feel that all your efforts won't be in vain!
Flying to Sicily
The simplest way to reach Sicily in Italy is to take a plane. The island has two big international airports. There's the
Palermo Airport, also known as the Falcone Borsellino Airport, in the island's capital city, Palermo. As well as the
Catania–Fontanarossa Airport in the town of Catania, located on the eastern side of Sicily. No matter where you're coming from, you're bound to see a flight landing at any of these airports. Also, there are many international flights that land at the smaller airports on the island. Though these ones might be more exclusive to flights coming from other European cities and countries.
Boarding A Ferry
If you're already near Sicily, you can also take a ferry to get here. There are various places where ships depart to get to the island. They include Livorno, Civitavecchia, Napoli, Villa San Giovanni, and Geneva in Switzerland. As long as you start from here, you'll reach Sicily in no time. Expect to arrive in the ports of Palermo, Catania, and Messina. And if you want, you can even bring your own vehicle along too! Some ferries allow passengers to board their motorcycles and cars on their trips to Sicily.
Going on a
train journey in Europe sounds like the ultimate travel dream, doesn't it? You get to relax on the train, see amazing sights, and experience a novelty that you won't find anywhere else in the world. With that said, can you even do this if you want to go to Sicily in Italy? The answer is yes, you can! Coming from nearby countries, you can take the Eurostar to get to Rome or Naples. And from there, you can take an Express train to reach the island. Don't worry! The journey is just as magical!
Riding A Bus
And finally, you can also ride a bus to get to Sicily. This might sound impossible since Sicily is an island that's fairly separate from mainland Italy, but rest assured that it's not! From Rome, Milan, or Firenze, there are many bus companies that go all the way to Sicily. You can see which ones on
Eurolines. The journey will be long but fulfilling! Moreover, it's good training for when you're already on the island. Buses are the most common public transport system in Sicily. If you didn't rent a car here, you'll only get to certain towns by bus.
If you want to go to Sicily, it's better that you learn how to get there beforehand. There are many ways to reach this island, some of which are easier while others offer an experience you won't soon forget!
