The Oscars may have just happened a couple of weeks ago but the rest of the world is already set for another great year of movies. Tons of awesome films have premiered since then, but the annual movie events are already gearing up for an exciting year ahead. Naturally, Cannes Film Festival 2024 will be among the first of such affairs. There's a lot to expect at this year's edition, which will be held from May 14 to 25, 2024. Most notably, director Greta Gerwig is set to chair the main competition jury this year. Highly anticipated sequels and prequels like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Inside Out 2” will premier at the event too.
Greta Gerwig Set to Chair This Year's Jury
One of the first news to come out about the upcoming Cannes Film Festival 2024 is that Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig will head this year's main competition jury. Gerwig recently achieved massive success with her most recent project, “Barbie” (2023) starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The movie, based on the best-selling doll of the same name, earned billions at the global box office and became a worldwide phenomenon. It was also nominated for eight Academy Awards, having won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish. She and other notable members of the film community will descend in Cannes and cast their votes on this year’s newest films.
Much-Anticipated Hollywood Premieres
The Cannes Film Festival has always been one of the best events to premiere highly anticipated films. This year, the most buzzed-about movie is “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” by Australian filmmaker George Miller. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth and will serve as a prequel to the highly successful “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015). The latter was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won six of them. So this new prequel has a lot to live up to. As does “Inside Out 2” from Pixar, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2015 animated film.

Major Comebacks for Hollywood Legends
Hollywood is always all over the Cannes Film Festival and the upcoming 77th edition is no different. Apart from the aforementioned films premiering at this year's event, a couple of industry icons and legends will be making their comebacks too. Arguably the most anticipated is Francis Ford-Coppola, known to the world as the director of the iconic Godfather trilogy. He is set to premiere his newest film, “Megalopolis” starring Adam Driver, Dustin Hoffman, Aubrey Plaza, and more. Ford-Coppola is said to have been earning for and working on this movie since the 1980s. There's also Clint Eastwood, actor-turned-filmmaker, who's said to debut his supposed final film, “Juror#2” at this year's festival.
An Impressive International Lineup
As with the Cannes Film Festival 2023 and other years prior, this year's edition will also premiere a treasure trove of international movies. The festival has been known to favor foreign (and of course, French) films instead of typical American Hollywood projects. At the upcoming Cannes Film Festival 2024, audiences can expect intriguing films like “Dheepan” by Emilia Perez, a musical crime drama about a sex-transitioning cartel boss in Mexico. Korea, on the other hand, has “Revolver” by Oh Seung-uk. Cannes 2017 Best Actress winner Jeon Do-yeon stars as a former police out for revenge after serving a prison sentence for someone else.
