ALX School Guide: Istituto Europeo di Design (IED)

July 05, 2024

Fashion is one of the four main disciplines of Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), a prestigious art school in Milan. It makes sense that the school has a campus in this city, especially since Milan serves as the fashion capital of Italy. The school explores the complexity of fashion, both as an art form and as an industry. While most fashion students go here for its design courses, IED still offers extensive and introspective programs in fashion business, media, and more. No matter your field in fashion, there's more to learn in this prominent institution.

History of Istituto Europeo di Design

The Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) was founded as a private design school in 1966. Prominent businessman Francesco Morelli established the school when he was just 23, providing ample opportunities for students to learn about various kinds of design. Over time, the school was organized to focus on four specific disciplines: Fashion, Visual Communication, Design, and Business Management. It didn't take long for IED to become one of the best fashion schools in Milan too, eventually rivaling the likes of Istituto Marangoni or even Florence's Polimoda. This also held the institution open campuses in Rome, Florence, Venice Barcelona, Madrid, São Paulo, and beyond.

What Does Istituto Europeo di Design Look Like?

Istituto Europeo di Design's flagship campus is located on Via Pompeo Leoni in Milan. The city's popular Parco delle Memorie Industriali is just in front of the school, while popular areas like Navigli, Quadronno, and Porta Romana are nearby. The campus itself is a grand and beautifully renovated Italian Baroque building, reflecting the artistry taught inside. As for its facilities, IED has enough studios, ateliers, classrooms, and more for all its fashion students, specifically those learning fashion design. It also boasts a big library and info-rich reference rooms that will help the business and communication majors.

The Istituto Europeo di Design Student Body

IED isn't just one of Milan's most famous art schools. It's also one of Europe's biggest fashion schools. The school welcomes around 13,000 students per year, a combination of both new enrollees and returning students. Since it's an international higher educational institution, IED also draws in countless applicants from around the world. Its percentage changes year to year, but it’s safe to say that international students make up a good chunk of the institute's entire student body.

Istituto Europeo di Design's Best Programs and Courses

Fashion Design, Fashion Stylist, Fashion Marketing, and Fashion Communication are some of IED's best fashion-related courses. They're all offered as Bachelor of Arts degrees, focusing on younger students who are about to begin their higher education. The school still offers a Master's degree though, which is in Digital Fashion. This is an extensive program for professionals to learn more about the industry's further ventures into technology. You shouldn't overlook the school's summer courses too. From fashion marketing to trends investigation, these programs give a more in-depth view of the industry at large.

Istituto Europeo di Design’s Prerequisites

Despite how prestigious it is, IED's prerequisites aren't that complex. For one thing, you only truly need a Baccalaureate qualification or anything equivalent to be qualified to apply. You'll then have to take the school's entrance exam if you're applying for an artistic degree. Once you've passed that, you'll then have to take a preliminary interview (whether in person or via video chat) for the school to determine if you'll get accepted or not. After that, you'll only have to pay the enrollment fee and you're officially a student!

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Istituto Europeo di Design?

IED's tuition fees depend on your income bracket. In general, the school's tuition fees range from a minimum of €9,200.00 to a maximum of €18.900.00 per year. This also comes with an enrollment fee you have to pay the moment you get accepted after the preliminary interview. This costs about €2.500.00, regardless of whether you're an EU or non-EU student. At the same time, the school also imposes a regional tax of €140.00. And if you're an international student, you'll then have to take a pre-requisite language proficiency course that costs €2.500.00.

Where is Istituto Europeo di Design in The City?

As already mentioned, IED's Milan campus is located on Via Pompeo Leoni, right at the heart of the city. It's in a central Milan neighborhood that's not too far from the city's most popular spots and districts. Hence, the area is great for students to stay. While the area is far from the most peaceful, it's still a safe part of the Italian fashion capital. You can live near the school all while living a fairly comfortable life in the city. It also helps that there are many luxury apartments you can rent in Milan, specifically those near the campus.

Istituto Europeo di Design's Famous Graduates

While Istituto Europeo di Design isn't the most famous fashion school in Milan, it has still produced several notable professionals working in the fashion industry today. Perhaps the most prominent is Maria Grazia Chiuri, the current creative director of Christian Dior. Chiuri first gained fame through her partnership with Pierpaolo Piccioli in designing for Valentino. Today, she now heads one of the biggest haute couture houses in the world. Italian jeweler James Rivière also graduated from here. He's a highly acclaimed jewelry designer who has worked with iconic museums like the Louvre in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and even the Vatican Museums.
