ALX School Guide: LCI Barcelona

July 18, 2024

You likely won't find a fashion school in Barcelona—or anywhere else, for that matter—that's as meticulous about teaching fashion as LCI Barcelona. More than just the standard design courses and business programs, the school offers other avenues that relate to less-explored fields in the industry. You can learn about making patterns for kids, for example, if you want to be a children's fashion designer. There's also a postgraduate degree in Trends Research and Strategic Thinking, a great field for those who want to stay on top of the business. These and more prove that LCI Barcelona understands fashion in a different way from other schools.

History of LCI Barcelona

Felicidad Duce Ripollés founded her own workshop in 1928. It started as a small group teaching the craft of dressmaking, embroidery, and the like, but over the years, it grew to be one of the most prominent fashion schools in Barcelona. For most of the 20th century, the school operated as a prestigious higher educational institution for those interested in having a career in fashion. Since the industry was also only growing around the same time, there weren't that many similar schools in the city. And in 2013, the Canadian network LCI Education acquired the institution, becoming the big LCI Barcelona it is today.

What Does LCI Barcelona Look Like?

LCI Barcelona boasts a big campus on Carrer d'Àlaba. Located in the artistic Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona, it now operates as one of the biggest and most prestigious art schools in the city. Its buildings stand out for their symmetric modern architecture and massive scales. These grand, contemporary structures house standard school facilities and ample spaces for its students to go all out with their designs. For fashion students in particular, LCI Barcelona provides big classrooms, spacious studios, and expansive ateliers, all for working on their various projects.

LCI Barcelona's Best Programs and Courses

What makes LCI Barcelona one of the world's finest fashion schools is that it offers a fairly complete range of fashion programs. Though there are the usual fashion design degrees, the school also offers courses in fashion business management, creative direction, fashion advertising, and more. This allows any fashion aspirants to learn more about the industry, even when they don't necessarily want to become designers. With this variety of degrees, LCI Barcelona becomes the perfect training ground for a new set of fashion professionals across the board. Here, you can graduate and get a career even in the more corporate side of fashion.

LCI Barcelona’s Prerequisites

LCI Barcelona's prerequisites are generally similar to those of other art schools in the city and beyond. If you're interested in applying for the school's Bachelor's Degree programs, you need a high school diploma and pass its entrance exam. For Master's Degree programs, on the other hand, you'll need to submit at least a Bachelor's Degree in any related field or any equivalent proof that you have completed university studies. And as an international student, you'll also need to have a B2-level certificate in English proficiency.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in LCI Barcelona?

Much like other higher educational institutions of its kind, LCI Barcelona has high tuition fees. They range from a minimum of €7,500.00 to a maximum of €10,680.00 per year. How high your costs will be depends on the program you enroll in. Naturally, Master's Degree courses are more expensive than undergraduate programs. On top of that, you also have to pay various admission and administrative fees, housing fees, costs for your materials (design tools, fabrics, etc.), and the living costs in Barcelona. All of these prove that studying fashion at LCI Barcelona is a costly endeavor.

Where is LCI Barcelona in Barcelona?

As already mentioned, LCI Barcelona is located on Carrer d'Àlaba in El Poblenou. The coastal district is known for its lively commercial scene. Hip cafes, cool bars, and trendy restaurants make up this popular area, perfect for students who want to learn fashion but also live in the local heartbeat of the Catalan capital. Poblenou also has a slight bohemian spirit to it, which will also do any art and fashion student some good. Fortunately, this is a great place to rent a luxurious Barcelona apartment too. Poblenou's real estate is among the best in the entire city.

LCI Barcelona's Famous Graduates

While LCI Barcelona is far from the most prominent fashion school in the city, let alone the world, it has still produced several notable graduates. One of them is Josep Font, the former creative director of Delpozo. Under his direction, the Spanish-born fashion house gained both critical acclaim and commercial success, even becoming a highly anticipated show during New York and Milan Fashion Week. There's also Imma Clé, a local designer who has made a name for herself in bridal wear. She's become one of the go-to designers for local brides getting married in the city and beyond.
