History of The American University of Paris

A former US State Department official, Lloyd DeLamater, founded the American University of Paris in 1962. Also a war veteran, DeLamater witnessed first-hand how the differences between countries could lead to international conflict and grave tragedy. Hence, he established this school to “bridge the gap of narrow nationalisms,” as he once claimed. Before the university became the acclaimed higher educational institution it is today, however, it started as a couple of rented rooms in the American Church of Paris. Beginning with just 100 students learning the same subjects taught in American universities, it didn't take long for the school to reach prominence.

What is The American University of Paris's Campus Like?

Located on Boulevard de La Tour-Maubourg in the 7th arrondissement, The American University of Paris boasts a fairly grand campus in the city's most famous district. Since this is where the Eiffel Tower is also located, you couldn't get any more French than this. And though it's not the biggest campus, the university still enjoys ample space. It has all the necessary standard facilities of any higher educational institution, not to mention a few outdoor areas that other schools in Paris don't have. Nevertheless, the best part about it is that it's at the heart of the French capital.

The American University of Paris Student Body

As a respected independent university, it's no surprise that The American University of Paris draws in a big student body. The school welcomes about 900 to 1000 enrollees per year, including both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. Since it's a bilingual school, it also attracts countless international students. True to its founder Lloyd DeLamater's original mission, The American University of Paris has cultivated a diverse student body of varying nationalities. Though it changes per year, a good percentage of the university's students comprise foreign enrollees who have moved to Paris to study.

The American University of Paris’s Best Programs and Courses

Most notably, The American University of Paris is known for its focus on liberal arts. While academics remain front and center here, the school's major programs mostly relate to art, history, and the like. Its undergraduate courses, for example, range from Art History and Ancient Greece to Comparative Literature and Creative Writing. Nevertheless, it still has other, more academic-leaning programs like Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Economics, among many others. As for its Graduate studies, these include Master's Degrees in Diplomacy & International Law, Global Communications, and International Affairs. Again, these programs harken back to the founder Lloyd DeLamater's objective of establishing the school—global understanding.
