History of Nanterre University
May of 1968, an infamous and historic month-long series of civil unrest, was a tumultuous event that resulted in breaking down the former and bigger University of
Paris. This led to the opening and establishment of new higher educational institutions in and near the city in 1970, including Nanterre University. In truth, the construction of Nanterre University was already in full swing in the early 1960s. But the site became the center of May 1968, hence it was named “Nanterre,” which is a reference to communism. Fortunately, things have been smooth sailing since then.

True to its name, Nanterre University is located in the Nanterre area in the La Défense
