London has had various iterations over the years. The first was The London Hospital Medical College, England's first medical school that opened in 1785. In 1843, it turned into St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, best known for having trained and taught the UK's first female doctor, Elizabeth Blackwell. But what was closest to the university today was the East London College, also known as the Queen Mary College. Housed in the People's Palace that opened in 1887, it was a series of technical schools in the palace's east wing. Parts of the university's campus are still on that very same site to this day.
