History of Brighton College

To say that Brighton College is historic is an understatement. The institution is the first of its kind in various ways, including the first Victorian public school in Sussex and the first independent school to teach Mandarin Chinese. At the same time, Brighton College’s legal battle with the Inland Revenue from 1916 to 1926 resulted in various changes in the tax law. They included the 1918 Income Tax Act, the 1921 & 1922 Finance Act, and section 24 of the 1927 Finance Act. And of course, you can't overlook the fact that countless students and alumni of Brighton College also fought in both World War I and World War II.

What is Brighton College's Campus Like?

Much like other international schools in London, Sussex, and the rest of the UK, Brighton College uses a house-based pastoral system. The school currently has 15 houses in total, all split by gender, though the staff attached to each one includes both sexes. And all houses are set within the safe and sophisticated campus along Eastern Road in Sussex. It has retained its original stone Victorian buildings but now houses modern facilities and big classrooms. At the same time, the campus also boasts expansive outdoor areas, often used for playing sports and other extracurricular activities.

The Brighton College Student Body

Though technically a public school, Brighton College operates more like a private boarding school. It's the kind of elite educational institution where many of the country and the world's elites enroll their kids, hoping they'd learn and study enough to one day go to the top universities in London and beyond. For the most part, Brighten College welcomes about 1,100 students per year, from ages 3 to 18. It's a co-ed school but there's no definitive ratio of boys to girls. They often vary from year to year. And these 1,100 students are divided into the 15 houses of the college, with around 48 and 85 in each.

What is Brighton College's Curriculum?

With all its history and centuries-long legacy, Brighton College surprisingly has a modern curriculum. The school takes pride in its Curriculum 11+, which is designed to prepare students for new and modern challenges. For one thing, this includes teaching different languages beyond English. The school also teaches German, Russian, Spanish, Latin, and most famously, Mandarin Chinese. At the same time, the college has also highlighted the importance of coding and IT skills. It has adapted its curriculum to include the digital landscape, which is one thing you can't say about the most prestigious schools in the country.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Brighton College?

Brighton College has a complex tuition system. The school is divided into three—the pre-prep, the preparatory school, and the senior school—and each has its own set of tuition fees. There's also the difference between students who are boarding on campus and those who don't. The former tend to have to pay more expensive fees. So how much does it cost for your kid to study at Brighton College? Well, to summarize, the lower and senior schools cost about £10,000.00 per term each, while those boarding on campus have to pay around £22,000.00 per term.

Where is Brighton College in London?

As already mentioned, Brighton College is located in Sussex. Located in Southeast England, it's a fairly famous county in the English countryside, boasting some of the most stunning natural wonders in all of the UK. Specifically, the school is in the resort town of Brighton in East Sussex, best known as a seaside escape in this part of the country. While the area is near the sea, the campus is a fair distance away from the coast. Nevertheless, the town is as well-organized as any London Suburb, complete with a myriad of attractions for locals and tourists alike. Not to mention some of the best and most affordable luxury homes to rent in the UK.
