History of Kingston Grammar School
Kingston Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in
London, perhaps even in the world. It traces its origins to the Middle Ages, with various references to institutions established at the time. One of the closest is when Gilbert de Southwell was described as a “Rector of the Schools in Kingston.” Eventually, these institutions came to be under the British Monarchy, specifically in 1547 to author Richard Taverner. After petitioning Queen Elizabeth to preserve this school, the Queen eventually granted it a royal charter in 1561. Then in 1946, it became an independent direct grant grammar school, and, in 1978, the school welcomed its first female students.
What is Kingston Grammar School's Campus Like?
The school's campus is located in Kingston, a
London Suburb along the River Thames. A fair distance away from the livelier and more hectic business-centric districts, its location allows it to have an expansive campus. And it does! Apart from the many grand buildings that such educational institutions normally have, Kingston Grammar School also has tons of outdoor areas. There's an entire football field, a tennis court, and other facilities that allow the students ample space for all sorts of extracurricular activities. Overall, it's a safe and spacious campus where students can learn, play, and grow in peace.

The Kingston Grammar School Student Body
Kingston Grammar School is an elite
private school in London that has a fairly small student body. It only welcomes about a little over 800 students per year, rarely going above 1,000. This is also on top of the fact that many of the enrollees they welcome each year include returning students who have yet to graduate. This makes it even clearer just how exclusive Kingston Grammar School truly is. As for how they're divided, the 800 students are spread throughout the school's five houses—Lovekyn, Queen's, Walworth, Taverner, and Stanley. Most of these houses were established in the early 20th century. The only modern house is Stanley, named after Olympic hockey gold medalist Stanley Shoveller, which was established in 2016.
What is Kingston Grammar School's Curriculum?
There are two separate educational institutions within the Kingston Grammar School. The first is the Lower School, which is similar to the middle school. This school includes three years of focusing on academics, highlighting subjects such as science, mathematics, history, and even different languages. The second is the GCSE school, which is tantamount to senior high school. These years are more focused on preparing the students for higher education, all while allowing them to participate in extracurricular activities too. Hence, the subjects here also include art, drama, technology, and more.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Kingston Grammar School?
As expected, Kingston Grammar School is fairly expensive. Its tuition fees cost about £8,290.00 per term, which includes coverage for textbooks, stationery, and even Personal Accident Insurance (incorporating Dental Cover). Do take note, however, that applying your kid to this school comes with an acceptance deposit of around £2,000.00. It's a one-time payment but it's a fairly high price nonetheless. There's also the £155.00 registration fee, which you have to pay every time you enroll your kid for the new school year. And if you want your child to eat lunch at school, this also comes with an extra £350.00 charge per term.
Where is Kingston Grammar School in London?
As already mentioned, Kingston Grammar School is located in Kingston upon Thames, a fairly residential
neighborhood in London. Technically, it is its own town situated in Southwest London, serving more as a suburb of the city instead of a standard district. The area is considerably more peaceful compared to the city center, thanks in large part to the tight-knit communities that have settled down here. It's a great place for families to stay too, especially since there are many schools—including Kingston Grammar School, of course—nearby. Even in terms of looking for a place to stay, the area has some of the best and most affordable
luxury homes to rent in London.
