Westminster School traces its origins to as far back as the 1340s. The earliest records of a school here include some classes held in Westminster Abbey's Muniment Room around that time. In 1540, Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries, which should have affected Westminster School if not for his royal charter. And while Mary I's reign turned Westminster Abbey into a Catholic church, the school itself remained the same. Queen Elizabeth I then re-established the school in 1560, alongside new statutes that selected 40 King's Scholars to attend the school for a year.
