The American Overseas School of Rome officially began in 1947. Originally named the “Overseas School of Rome,” it was a collaboration between American and British mothers who saw the need for an
international school in Rome. They also managed to persuade American and British Ambassadors to convince the House of Torlonia to rent part of their Villa Torlonia on Via Nomentana as the school's first campus. This, on October 16, 1947, the American Overseas School of Rome opened its doors, beginning with 60 students. Five years later, in 1952, the school moved to its current location on Via Cassia.

Hence, the school mostly welcomes about 500 to 600 per year, composed of both new enrollees and returning students who have yet to graduate. And though it changes year to year, the number of foreign students tends to be bigger than the number of local Italian enrollees. Part of it is that the school teaches almost exclusively in English.
