And as you explore and learn more about the school, you'll know that they're all about helping students grow and develop, preparing them for the real world.

History of St. Stephen's School

Dr. John O. Patterson founded St. Stephen's School in 1964 in Rome to create a haven for students from around the world to learn and study together. Patterson served as the headmaster of Connecticut's Kent School, a prestigious preparatory day and boarding school in the US. He and his team of educators and scholars selected the Italian capital for its rich history. Even during ancient times, Rome has already served as a center for major philosophical, social, artistic, and political advancement. Patterson believed that there was no better place to start an international school.

What is St. Stephen's School's Campus Like?

Located on Aventine Hill, St. Stephen's School is in one of the central neighborhoods of Rome. Aventine Hill is famous for its beautiful parks and great city views so that alone is already a nice incentive for your kid to study here. The campus itself even looks more like a grand villa or a resort than a standard school. Don't worry! This doesn't take anything away from the high-quality education they provide here, especially since it still has the standard school facilities. There are spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a big library, and even outdoor areas for playing sports.

The St. Stephen's School Student Body

Even with a fairly big campus, St. Stephen's School's student body remains pretty small. The school only welcomes a maximum of 300 enrollees per year, composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. It hasn't grown far from its early days, when it used to accept about 250 students a year. Moreover, its boarding school can only accommodate around 50 students at a time, considerably lowering the school's status as a boarding school. Today, it's more of a primary and secondary school for international students who have moved to Rome.

What is St. Stephen's School's Curriculum?

St. Stephen's School technically has two curricula. Firstly, there's the IB Diploma Program, which is famously focused on academics. This program relies heavily on the student's academic performance, especially with how it may play for their higher education. Schools with an IB Diploma Program tend to produce graduates who have gone on to study in the top universities in London, the Ivy League Schools in the US, and other prestigious schools around the world. Secondly, the school also follows the American High School curriculum. On top of academics, this curriculum also requires students to study liberal arts and optional language classes.
