ALX School Guide: ES American School

September 06, 2024

The ES American School is one of those Barcelona international schools that lets its students enjoy the Mediterranean escape where it's located. While other academic institutions are understandably more focused on teaching the youth indoors, this school is more open about letting them get used to the outdoors. This isn't to say that the school has outdoor classrooms or anything like that. It's just that ES International School gives as much focus on the student's extracurricular activities as it does on its standard academics. It's a great way to balance a student's education.

History of ES American School

ES American School has been around since the turn of the 21st century. The school was founded in 1999, becoming one of the many international schools in Barcelona at the time. Since then, many other educational institutions were set up in the Catalan capital, but ES American School remained among the most prominent. It helped that the school was one of the first to establish an anti-discrimination policy. Not only did the school not discriminate against applicants regardless of their race, religion, gender, and more, but the students and staff were discouraged from discriminating against each other too.

What is ES American School's Campus Like?

Located on Autovia de Castelldefels, the campus is set along the outskirts of town. It's even nearer to the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport than any of the central neighborhoods in Barcelona. Nevertheless, ES American School isn't so far that you'd need to move out of the city to enroll your kids here. The campus itself certainly looks and feels like it belongs in Barcelona. From its Mediterranean-style buildings to its many sports courts under the sun, there's no doubt that the school is in the Catalan capital. It has all the standard school facilities and more than enough outdoor space.

The ES American School Student Body

Even with its expansive campus, Barcelona's ES American School remains a relatively small school. At least, when it comes to its student body. With all its impressive tennis courts and big classrooms, the school only welcomes more or less about 140 students per year. They're composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. But even with how small the student body is, the ES American School is still as global and as diverse as ever. All of its 140 students come from over 40 different countries around the world.

What is ES American School's Curriculum?

ES American School is impressively meticulous when it comes to its curriculum. It actually offers three, divided by grade level. Firstly, there's the elementary school, which follows an IB World School and follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). Secondly, there's the Middle School, spanning grades 6 to 8. This program is more about letting the students maintain a nice balance between their academics and extracurricular activities, especially athletics & the arts. Finally, the third is its High School Program, which spans from grades 9 to 12. This part of the school follows the American High School Diploma curriculum.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in ES American School?

Unsurprisingly, ES American School is fairly expensive. Compared to other international schools in Barcelona, which impose tuition fees as low as below €1,000.00 per year, this school's starting amount is €11,470.00 for its elementary school. The price then increases as the student ascends grade levels, culminating in about €13,160.00 per year by the time they reach high school. On top of that, ES American School also imposes additional costs. Luckily, you only have to pay two of them one time—the €195.00 application fee and €4,000.00 legacy fee. While others are annual fees, including the €80.00 library fee, €440.00 activities fee, and €500.00 for textbooks and other materials.

Where is ES American School in Barcelona?

As already mentioned, ES American School's campus is located on Autovia de Castelldefels by the southern edge of Barcelona. It may be far from the city center, but the area itself is fairly urban. Apart from the school, countless facilities and establishments will make settling down here with your family as hassle-free as ever. Its location is even convenient considering it's right next to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Moreover, the district has some of the most affordable luxury homes to rent in Barcelona. Getting a place to stay near the school is no problem at all!
