ALX School Guide: Deutsche Schule Barcelona

September 06, 2024
2024-09-06
You'll find the Deutsche Schule Barcelona at the heart of the city's metropolitan area. It's practically in the middle of the bustling Catalan capital, near many of the city's most popular spots. And yet the school itself remains a peaceful and safe place for kids to learn, grow, and develop. For the most part, the school is a standard academic institution, complete with the standard facilities you'd expect in such a place. But what separates it from the others is that this German school applies the Germans' well-structured sensibility in education. It can benefit all sorts of students in the city.

History of Deutsche Schule Barcelona

Deutsche Schule Barcelona is perhaps one of the oldest international schools in Barcelona. Pastor Otto Amtsberg of the German Protestant congregation founded the school in 1894, becoming one of the first academic institutions in the Catalan capital to welcome and teach non-Spanish students. In 1901, the school officially separated from the Protestant congregation, and in 1904, its first school building was built in Calle Moya. At the time, it only welcomed about 81 students, slowly but surely growing and expanding until 1941. In that year, the school reopened after the Spanish Civil War and went on to welcome about 1,000 students.

What is Deutsche Schule Barcelona's Campus Like?

Though it's widely regarded as a school in Barcelona, Deutsche Schule Barcelona is technically not in the city. Its campus is located on Avenue de Jacint Esteva Fontanet in the Esplugues de Llobregat municipality. It's still fairly close to Barcelona's central neighborhoods though, so the city's residents don't have any problems sending their kids here. Especially since the campus is spacious, safe, and sophisticated. It's a fairly expansive campus with all the standard school facilities, from classrooms and laboratories to a gymnasium and ample outdoor areas. It's in a fairly peaceful part of the municipality too, so the students' safety is more than guaranteed.

The Deutsche Schule Barcelona Student Body

Deutsche Schule Barcelona began with only 81 students in the early 1900s and by 1941, it was welcoming over 1,000. What about now? How big is the school's student body today? Around 1,660 per year. Naturally, this is composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. Thanks to ever-expanding globalism, the school's student body is much more diverse today too. Its students now come from over 21 countries around the world, namely other European states, the US, and Asian countries. The school is a far cry from what it was back then!

What is Deutsche Schule Barcelona's Curriculum?

Since it's literally named the “German School of Barcelona,” it's no surprise that it follows the German curriculum. It's as well-detailed as other curricula from other European countries, but this school's approach is fairly different. For one thing, the elementary school is mostly taught in either German or Spanish. Catalan students, however, are given an option to attend special classes with Catalan lessons. Its secondary school is also divided into two: the preparatory school and the new secondary school. The former follows a more traditional approach to the German curriculum, including its three educational levels—Gymnasium (preparatory) Realschule (simple secondary), and Hauptschule (general school). The new secondary school, on the other hand, offers classes taught in other languages apart from Spanish and German.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Deutsche Schule Barcelona?

While it's generally costly to enroll your kids in Deutsche Schule Barcelona, it's far from the most expensive international school in Barcelona. Its tuition fees range from around €4,800.00 to €7,600.00 per year, with the least expensive being the nursery to pre-K years and the most expensive being the secondary school. In the grand scheme of things, these prices are high. However, they're still pretty low compared to the tens of thousands of Euros it will cost you to enroll your kids in Barcelona's other international schools. You also have the option of paying it annually or monthly, with the latter costing about €500.00 to €760.00 per month.

Where is Deutsche Schule Barcelona in Barcelona?

As already mentioned, Deutsche Schule Barcelona is located in the Esplugues de Llobregat municipality in Barcelona. Though it's technically not in the Catalan capital, the smaller town is so close to the central districts that the school is widely regarded as part of Barcelona. It's a lot more peaceful too, maintaining a nice balance between its urban settings and the nearby rural areas. With many residential districts nearby, you can stay near the school and live a fairly quiet life near the bustling metropolis. Fortunately, the municipality also has some of the most affordable luxury homes to rent in Barcelona.

Don't underestimate Deutsche Schule Barcelona! It may not be as prominent as the American and British-run international schools in Barcelona, but it remains a prestigious educational institution that offers high-quality education in the Catalan capital.
