When you see
Akua School, one of the finest international schools in Barcelona, you'd sooner think it was a summer resort. The school building itself looks more like a vacation villa, the sandpit & greenery give that signature Mediterranean magic, and the campus is located in one of the sunniest parts of the city. You'd almost prefer to have a vacation here instead of sending your kids to school! But that's exactly why it's a great school. With such a safe and comfortable space, your little ones will have no trouble and perhaps even enjoy studying here.

History of Akua School
With how popular it has become over the years, you'd think that Akua School has been around for decades, much like the other
international schools in Barcelona. However, the school only opened in 2016. The non-profit organization Fundación Akua established the school as a way to support social change through education, and upon opening, it didn't take long for it to receive accreditation by Generalitat de Catalunya. Moreover, Akua School is one of the very few accredited Montessori nurseries and primary schools in Barcelona. They personalized and adopted a child-centered approach to education.
What is Akua School's Campus Like?
While Akua School is considered a Barcelona school, it's technically located outside of the city. The campus is in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, a small municipality just outside the Catalan capital. While it's a fair distance away from the
central neighborhoods of Barcelona, it's near enough that the city's residents can easily send their kids to go to school here. They'd naturally want to as well, especially with how big, spacious, and open the campus is. With its villa-like premises and sand-pit play area, the school looks more like a resort than an academic institution.

The Akua School Student Body
Even with a beautiful campus with ample outdoor space, Akua School isn't that big of a school. Its student body vastly changes from year to year, mostly ranging in the hundreds. After all, it remains a Montessori school which is usually small compared to standard educational institutions in
Barcelona. The usual ratio of teachers to students here is 1:8, which means that classes aren't all that big either. Fortunately, this gives the students who are enrolled here ample opportunity to learn and study at their own pace, all with the supreme guidance of their teachers.
What is Akua School's Curriculum?
As an accredited Montessori school, Akua School is more about a hands-on approach to education. As already mentioned, the ratio of teachers to students here is around 1:8 or 1:10, allowing the former to have ample time to focus on each student equally. This then lets the kids study and develop at their own pace, all while allowing them to form strong bonds with the teachers too. With more trust between the two, the young students can have more trust in what they're being taught and more confidence in themselves too.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Akua School?
Is it expensive to send your kids to Akua School? In the grand scheme of things, it is. The school's lowest tuition fee is kindergarten, which is €9,685.00 per year. This is already big considering it's just kindergarten, and the student's tuition gets higher and higher as they ascend each grade level. On top of that, the school also imposes additional fees, including a one-time €3,245.00 registration fee for new students, a monthly €150.00 bus service, a monthly €15.00 welcome service, among many others. Add all that up and you're looking to pay tens of thousands of Euros per school year.
Where is Akua School in Barcelona?
As already mentioned, Akua School is located in the small town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló near Barcelona. While it's technically not located in the city, specifically the central districts, it's still near enough that the school is widely regarded as part of the Catalan capital. Santa Coloma de Cervelló itself is not a rural town, but it's undeniably less urban than Barcelona. It evokes a provincial charm that's quiet and peaceful, a world away from the city's hustle and bustle. You might even prefer to stay here, near your kid's school, instead of
renting a luxury apartment in Barcelona.
