Where Can You Live with Your Family in Rome?

Much like other major cities, specifically capital cities, Rome gets a lot of flak for its crime rates. While it's unfair to say that the city is a dangerous place, you also can't ignore that its crime rates are far from low. So does this mean that families shouldn't live in the Italian capital? Of course not! There are already many living here now, so if you relocate to Rome with your loved ones, you'll be fine. Just make sure to settle down in the family-friendly neighborhoods in Rome. The Vatican is one, specifically the area near the famous churches. There's also Prati and Testaccio, which are largely more peaceful than other areas.

Trastevere

It's easy to overlook Trastevere when discussing the best places to stay with your family in Rome. While it may be one of the most popular neighborhoods in Rome, many regard it as a more adult-centric area. It's a funky bohemian spot filled with beer pubs, cool bards, and a few hipster cafes. Is that a suitable place to raise your family? Well, those are only one part of Trastevere. The other is a largely residential district with many great homes, tight-knit communities, and quiet corners. The neighborhood is big enough that families can stay a fair distance away from the most bustling spots.

Testaccio

Testaccio is another district that you might consider less family-friendly at first glance. From its colorful buildings to its historic sites, it doesn't look and feel like the kind of place where kids can live comfortably. Fortunately, that is not the case. While it's true that Testaccio is another trendy district filled with crowded restaurants and raucous nightclubs, it remains a residential area at its core. There are lovely green spaces, kid-friendly spots, and several fine luxury apartments to rent in Rome. It helps that the area is far from the most expensive in the city too.

Ostiense

Part of why Ostiense is one of the best neighborhoods for families to stay in Rome is because it's one of the city's suburbs. Located in the southern part of the Italian capital, the area is largely residential and has historically housed the working class. There's also the fact that there are barely any famous landmarks here. The closest one is the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four main papal churches in Rome. Apart from that, tourists rarely go to Ostiense unless they want to go off the beaten path.

Prati

Located on the west bank of River Tiber, Prati is one of the more upscale neighborhoods on this list. It's a refined district with gourmet restaurants, chic boutiques, and the like. It may get some considerable tourist traffic, but it's still not as crowded as other, more popular areas. Here, you and your family can settle down and live the good life, eating in Michelin-starred restaurants, playing at the nearby park, and perhaps even going to the theater on weekends. It's the kind of family-friendly district for a relatively luxurious lifestyle.

Trionfale

Part of why Prati and now, Trionfale, are family-friendly neighborhoods in Rome is that they're both close to the Vatican. As the seat of power for the Roman Catholic Church, it's one of the safest spots in the world, let alone in the Italian capital. Naturally, the low crime rates and tight security spill over to the nearby districts. Trionfale, specifically, is as tourist-friendly as the Vatican. This may not sound like a good place to settle down with your family, but the Vatican still draws in most of the tourists.
