ALX School Guide: Kensington School

September 11, 2024

Kensington School sounds like something you'd expect in London, doesn't it? The British capital is fairly known for its academics, after all, so the city is filled to the brim with prominent educational institutions. Kensington School, however, is not one of them. In truth, it is one of the many international schools in Barcelona. The place certainly operates like a prestigious British school, but it's situated on the famous Carrer dels Cavallers in the Catalan capital. It's a true-blue academy that has fostered a nice family atmosphere within its vast campus. You'd want to enroll your kids in a school like this one!

History of Kensington School

Edward Paul Giles, a graduate of Cambridge University, founded the Kensington School in Barcelona in 1966. His objective was to provide British education to an international community. And since Barcelona was already a fairly global city at that time, it became the perfect place to start. It also helped that around the time, there were already many international schools in Barcelona, including British institutions. So Kensington School felt right at home in the Catalan capital. Moreover, something that has never changed since then is the school's practice of operating in small classes, allowing each student to get ample instruction and guidance.

What is Kensington School's Campus Like?

Located on Carrer dels Cavallers in the Les Corts district, Kensington School is in the middle of the Catalan capital. Les Corts is known as one of the central neighborhoods in Barcelona, best known as a peaceful residential district. While it's far from the biggest campus in the city, it's still impressively huge and has all the standard school facilities. There are spacious classrooms, big laboratories, a huge library, a well-stocked cafeteria, and many common areas where kids can play, socialize, and have fun. Though it doesn't have a lot of outdoor areas, there's enough space for kids to have PE and hang out outside too.

The Kensington School Student Body

Barcelona's Kensington School is one of those rare cases where its student body is fairly proportional to its campus. The school doesn't have a big campus and in turn, it doesn't have that many students. The school welcomes about 270 enrollees per year, composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. Another unique thing about its student body is that it's made up of 95% international students from over 70 different countries. Most of the other international schools usually have considerably more local students than foreign enrollees. Kensington School has it the other way around.

What is Kensington School's Curriculum?

Kensington School follows the British Curriculum, one of the most prominent in the world. What separates this from other curricula, both in Barcelona and beyond, is that it maintains a nice balance between the compulsory academic subjects and other courses. So apart from the vital math, science, and literature classes, the school puts as much emphasis on teaching other languages, athletics, and the arts. In turn, this encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities, helping them hone their skills in various fields so that'll they can discover their true passions and succeed in what they're truly good at.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Kensington School?

Kensington School is perhaps among the most expensive international schools in Barcelona. Such educational institutions are generally pricey, but Kensington School is among the highest with its tuition fees. Its starting price is €12,525.00 per year, from kindergarten to grade 5. It then goes up to €16,635.00 per year, starting from grade 6 until grade 12. On top of all that, there's also the one-time enrollment fee, which costs €4,175.00, as well as other additional costs including those for materials, lunch fees, and more. Considering that Barcelona's living costs are already high, having to add these to your expenses will be a doozy!

Where is Kensington School in Barcelona?

As already mentioned, Kensington School is located on Carrer dels Cavallers in the Les Corts district, one of the more residential neighborhoods in Barcelona. It's also among the more peaceful and safest, making it a great place for families to settle down in the Catalan capital. Since it's still one of the central districts, however, expect prices here to be higher than in other areas, specifically the outskirts. You can also expect Les Corts to have among the priciest luxury apartments to rent in Barcelona. There may be a lot of real estate here, allowing you to stay near the school, but it comes with a huge price!

Kensington School is perhaps Barcelona's equivalent to an elite, private British boarding school. It offers the same sort of high-quality education and prestige, all within a beautiful campus in the sunny Catalan capital.
