ALX School Guide: Schweizer Schule Barcelona

September 12, 2024
2024-09-12
Located at the heart of the city, Schweizer Schule Barcelona is one of the finest international schools in Barcelona. Uniquely, it's a Swiss school in the Catalan capital. The city's other international schools are either American or British. This is the only one to come out of Switzerland, hence, its main languages are Spanish and German. The school also spans from preschool (Vorkindergarten) to senior high school (Sekundarstufe II), which means that enrolling your kid here will shape them for the rest of their lives. With a great campus and high-quality education on offer, that's not a bad idea!

History of Schweizer Schule Barcelona

Founded in 1919, Schweizer Schule Barcelona is among the oldest and most historic international schools in Barcelona. It's even safe to assume that it might have been the first-ever foreign-led educational institution to open in the Catalan capital. Most of the other city's international schools, particularly the American and British schools, opened after World War II. Schweizer Schule Barcelona, on the other hand, is one of the very few that was established before the Second World War. At the same time, it's the only Swiss school in the Catalan capital.

What is Schweizer Schule Barcelona's Campus Like?

You'll find Schweizer Schule on Carrer d'Alfons XII in the famous Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. One of the central neighborhoods in Barcelona, it's a popular area known for its tapas bars and cool cafes. The school campus, however, is notably big for a school located near the city center. It boasts big buildings and spacious outdoor areas, which are more common among academic institutions located along the outskirts of the city and in the nearby suburbs. Its campus and its location arguably make the school even more prominent among foreign families who have moved to Barcelona.

The Schweizer Schule Barcelona Student Body

Much like the other international schools in Barcelona, Schweizer Schule has a fairly small student body. The school welcomes about 650 enrollees per year, composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. While 650 students is arguably a lot, this student body is still a lot smaller compared to other schools, especially local educational institutions, that have over 1,000 students. Nevertheless, these 650 students come from over 20 different countries, with a 1:2.5 ratio of local to international students. This further proves just how global Schweizer Schule truly is as a school.

What is Schweizer Schule Barcelona's Curriculum?

Part of what makes Schweizer Schule stand out among Barcelona's many international schools is that English isn't front and center here. Since English is widely considered the “universal language,” this school has still operated smoothly with German as the main language. It's a Swiss school, after all, and it follows the Swiss curriculum, and over half of its teaching staff come from Switzerland. Don't worry! The school still has English classes too, on top of Spanish, Catalan, and French classes as well.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Schweizer Schule Barcelona?

Schweizer Schule Barcelona isn't exactly the most expensive school in the city, but's far from affordable too. The school's tuition fees start at €7,063.00 per year, which is when the student is still in kindergarten. It goes up to €7,534.00 upon reaching primary school, namely from grades 1 to 6. In middle school, the tuition goes up again, this time ranging from €8,007.00 to €9,726.00 per year from grades 7 to 11. By grade 12, you're looking to pay about €10,250.00 per year. Don't forget about the extra fees too, which include admission fees, enrollment fees, lunch fees, and more.

Where is Schweizer Schule in Barcelona?

As already mentioned, Schweizer Schule is located on Carrer d'Alfons in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. The area is best known as one of the biggest among the central neighborhoods, located right by the city's most iconic spots. The district is mostly safe and largely residential but also has hip parts filled with popular tapas bars, cool cafes, indie boutiques, and more. As far as settling down with your family is concerned, this is still a suitable place. It's among the safer parts of the city and you already know that there's a good school nearby. You'll just have to contend with renting among the most expensive luxury apartments in Barcelona for your place.

As one of the very few Swiss international schools in Barcelona, Schweizer Schule is a unique institution in the city's education landscape. It offers high-quality education without having to rely on English.
