History of The United Nations International School

The UN was formed right after the Second World War in 1945. Two years later, the United Nations International School was established in 1947. Contrary to popular belief, the school came first in the Big Apple. The UN chose New York City as its official headquarters in 1948 while the school was founded a year prior. The latter took place because many UN workers, many of whom come from other countries, found that it was hard for their children to adapt to the city's educational system. Hence, the UNIS was formed, becoming one of the first and finest international schools in New York City.

What is The United Nations International School's Campus Like?

The United Nations International School is located on FDR Drive in Manhattan. Though it's on the same island as many of the central neighborhoods of New York City, it's still a fair distance away from the main districts. The campus is right by the East River and is in a fairly peaceful area. Slightly far from the Big Apple's more bustling areas, it's a quiet campus where students can learn and play in peace. Its big buildings also have all the standard school facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, a massive library, a cafeteria, and more.

The United Nations International School Student Body

It's no surprise that the United Nations International School is one of the biggest international schools in New York City, both in campus and student body. The school welcomes about 1,600 enrollees per year, composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. It's also a diverse student body, with minorities making up around 17% of all students. They also come from different countries, further upholding its parent organization in promoting globalism. On many fronts, the UNIS is a scholastic reflection of the UN itself.

What is The United Nations International School's Curriculum?

Since it's a founding school of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, the United Nations International School follows it too. This curriculum heavily focuses on academics, ensuring that students will reach greater scholastic heights upon graduation. This is a huge factor in how many of the school's graduates went on to study in some of the world's most prestigious schools, from the top universities in London to the Ivy League schools in the US. At the same time, UNIS believes in multilingualism, hence different languages are also a big part of the school's curriculum.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at The United Nations International School?

It should come as no surprise that the United Nations International School is very expensive. Even starting in nursery to kindergarten, it will already cost about $44,196.00 per year. When the student goes to primary school, the tuition fees go up to around $44,196.00 per year. In middle school, the fees increase again, this time ranging from a minimum of $45,834.00 to a maximum of $46,463.00 per year. On top of all that, there are various additional fees too. They include an admissions fee ($250.00 per year), a tuition pre-payment ($1,000.00 per year), and a one-time security deposit ($300.00).

Where is The United Nations International School in New York City?

As already mentioned, the United Nations International School is located on FDR Drive on the east side of Manhattan. Since it's along the coast of Manhattan Island, the school overlooks the East River and is a fair distance away from the Big Apple's central districts. For the location of the campus, it's a safe and secure place. However, FDR Drive is far from a suitable place for families. You'd do well to settle down in any of the nearby neighborhoods, many of which have the finest luxury apartments in New York City.
