While most of the international schools in New York City are private, Stuyvesant High School is public instead. This doesn't mean it's any less of the city's private schools, but rather it's different and more accessible. Some might not even consider it as an international school, but its student body proves otherwise. Stuyvesant High School welcomes a diverse range of students, including different backgrounds, financial statuses, and more. And of course, you can't forget the high-quality education they provide here. All of these combine into a prestigious institution at the heart of the Big Apple.

History of The Stuyvesant High School

The Stuyvesant High School is perhaps one of the oldest international schools in New York City. It was officially established in 1904 and was a result of a lot of hard work. In 1887, New York City's Superintendent of Schools, William Henry Maxwell wrote about the need for a trade school in the city. Though New York's first trade school, the Manual Training High School, opened in Brooklyn in 1893, Maxwell, with the help of famed architect C. B. J. Snyder, still pursued to open a separate but similar educational institution in Manhattan.

What is The Stuyvesant High School's Campus Like?

Stuyvesant High School's massive campus is on Chambers Street in Battery Park City. While it's not exactly a central neighborhood of New York City in its own right, it's still near many of the more popular districts. Tribeca and Wall Street, for example, are only a hop and a skip away. As for the campus itself, it's a big school considering that it's in the middle of a bustling metropolis. The school boasts big buildings, all the standard school facilities, and a few designated areas for extracurricular activities. It has a full-blown auditorium, gymnasium, and more.

The Stuyvesant High School Student Body

Stuyvesant High School is undoubtedly one of the biggest schools in New York City, both in its campus and student body. The school boasts a total enrollment of over 3,000 students, composed of both new applicants and those returning who haven't graduated yet. While it's technically not an international school, its student body remains extremely diverse. Stuyvesant High School is even famous for its Asian-dominated student body, with Asian-Americans comprising around 71.7%. This is substantially more than its white students, who make up only 18.3%, Hispanic students, who make up 3.8%, and black students, who make up 1.4%.

What is The Stuyvesant High School's Curriculum?

Stuyvesant High School takes pride in its status as a college preparatory school. Hence, the curriculum heavily focuses on academics, fashioned in a way to encourage students to get high grades. With well-detailed lesson plans, the school's program is also aimed at helping students get into the world's most prestigious schools after graduation, such as the Ivy League colleges and the top universities in London, among many others. At the same time, Stuyvesant High School still encourages its students to participate in extracurricular activities too. It's even fairly famous for having 32 varsity teams and a stable student government.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Stuyvesant High School?

There are no tuition fees at Stuyvesant High School. Since it's a public prep school, it's a state-funded academic institution. With that said, however, this doesn't mean that sending your kid here won't be costly. You may not be paying any tuition fees here, but Stuyvesant High School imposes other costs instead. Ranging from purchasing a gym uniform and school lunch fees to Advancement Place (AP) test fees, the average student spends about $1,000.00 during their four-year tenure here. It may not seem much, but when you take into account the high living costs in New York City, that's still a lot.
