History of The German International School New York

Siegfried A. Kessler, a former president of Carl Zeiss, founded the German International School New York in 1980. Kessler also founded the non-profit organization German Forum, which sought to establish an academic institution that would provide educational continuity for German kids living in the Tri-State area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. In 1979, a year before opening the school, Kessler managed to get the 'Deutscher Auslandsschulverein New York' (German School Association) as trustees of the institution. With a good foundation set, the school officially opened on September 8, 1980.

What is The German International School New York's Campus Like?

The German International School New York is located in White Plains, a smaller city in New York's Westchester County. Though it's a fair distance away from the central neighborhoods of New York City, many New York families, specifically those of German descent, still send their kids here. It helps that it boasts one of the biggest campuses among the most prominent schools in the state. Beyond the standard school facilities, German International School New York boasts many state-of-the-art amenities that any respected institution would want. There's a well-stocked library, a full-on gymnasium, and more.

The German International School New York Student Body

Even with its massive campus, the German International School New York has a pretty standard student body. The school welcomes over 400 students per year, composed of both new applicants and returning enrollees who have yet to graduate. Moreover, more than 10% of its student body comes from different countries, further proving how international this school truly is. While it's not exactly the most diverse school out there, the students here are not a monolith. They speak different languages, uphold different cultures, and come from different backgrounds.

What is The German International School New York's Curriculum?

The German International School New York maintains a nice balance between its two backgrounds—German and American. The school awards its graduates two diplomas, namely the NY State High School Diploma and the Deutsches Internationales Abitur (DIA). The former officially recognized that the student has finished their secondary education in New York State, while the latter allows the graduate to possibly get into Germany's most prestigious colleges and universities. As a bilingual school, German is as important and widely taught as English. This is the school's original mission, after all, and has retained the practice even when the school has become more diverse and American over the years.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at The German International School New York?

As a school that offers education from Pre-K to grade 12, the German International School New York has a fairly unique way of imposing its tuition fees. For one thing, it remains the same throughout all its grade levels. From Pre-K to grade 12, the tuition fees cost around $27,500.00 per year. While this is far from the most expensive school in the Tri-State area, it's still pretty high when you consider the living costs in New York City and beyond. Other fees come with enrolling your kids here too, including admission fees and school lunch fees.

Where is The German International School in New York City?

As mentioned previously, the German International School New York is located in White Plains, a separate city in Westchester County. Located 25 miles north of Manhattan, it's not too far from New York City itself. The city, on the other hand, is arguably more suitable for families than the Big Apple. Apart from having a top school nearby, White Plains is also a lot safer and more peaceful compared to New York City. At the same time, the city also has some of the more affordable luxury homes in New York, Connecticut, and beyond.
