History of The German International School New York
Siegfried A. Kessler, a former president of Carl Zeiss, founded the German International School New York in 1980. Kessler also founded the non-profit organization German Forum, which sought to establish an academic institution that would provide educational continuity for German kids living in the Tri-State area of
New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. In 1979, a year before opening the school, Kessler managed to get the 'Deutscher Auslandsschulverein New York' (German School Association) as trustees of the institution. With a good foundation set, the school officially opened on September 8, 1980.

The school awards its graduates two diplomas, namely the NY State High School Diploma and the Deutsches Internationales Abitur (DIA).
