Fordham University stands out in a lot of ways. Firstly, it's one of and arguably the most prestigious Jesuit Catholic schools in the country. Religion and high education tend to be at odds with each other, but this one has converged the two in a compelling way. Secondly, it's in the Bronx, a borough that's practically a treasure trove of academic institutions. Among those in the area, it's safe to say that Fordham University is its brightest gem. If you're considering furthering your education or you know someone who's on their way to college, consider checking this place out!

History of Fordham University

Former archbishop of the Diocese of New York, John Hughes, founded Fordham University in 1841. An alumnus of Mount Saint Mary's University, Hughes intended to follow the school's model of education and open the St. Joseph's Seminary. Two years prior, in 1939, he purchased the Rose Hill Manor, a 106-acre farm in Fordham, a village in the Bronx borough of New York City. He first opened the St. Joseph's Seminary alongside St. John's College, which was only a small school at the time. Both institutions would then converge, resulting in the foundation of one of the oldest Catholic higher educational institutions on the East Coast of the US.

What Does Fordham University Look Like?

While parts of Fordham University have remained in its original location on Fordham, the school's campus is spread throughout various New York neighborhoods. The first is the one in Rose Hill in Fordham in the Bronx, which is adjacent to Bronx Park. The second is Lincoln Center in Manhattan, which is also near Central Park. And the third is in Harrison, a smaller town in New York State's Westchester County. Its original building in Fordham, while renovated over the years, is still there too, representing all the years this school has stood strong. It's a lovely campus with ample outdoor areas that almost look and feel a world away from the hectic Big Apple.

The Fordham University Student Body

Over 16,500 students attend Fordham University each year, composed of both new applicants and returning enrollees who have yet to graduate. Though it's considerably fewer compared to other universities in New York, this number of students is still impressive considering that Fordham University is a Jesuit Catholic school. It's easy to think that such an institution, even when it's built for higher education, will tend to be more exclusive with the kinds of students they accept. However, the school also boasts a rather diverse student body, with its enrollees around 47.9% White, 17.3% Latinx, 10.8% Asian, 7.44% Black, 3.98% Biracial, 0.0846% Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders, and 0.0785% Native American.

Fordham University's Best Programs and Courses

Business and finance reign supreme at Fordham University. While it's not exactly the best-known business school in the city, let alone in all of New York State, it has still garnered a reputation in the corporate world. Hence, its most popular academic programs are those related to business, management, economics, finance, accounting, and more. Its Gabelli School of Business offers all of these, ranging from Bachelor's degrees to even a few MBAS. Those who want to climb the corporate ladder would do well to enroll here, be it as an undergraduate or postgraduate.

Fordham University’s Prerequisites

With a 54.1% acceptance rate, is it safe to say that getting into Fordham University isn't all that difficult? Well, it's still hard to say. While it's true that your chances of getting accepted here are brighter in other institutions, the place remains a prominent university. There's still no guarantee that you'll automatically get in, especially if your grades are not up to par. For example, apart from the usual prerequisites (high school diploma for undergraduates or a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any related field for postgraduates), the school required a GPA score of at least 3.71. This is higher than those of Ivy League schools, which require a minimum GPA score of 3.5.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Fordham University?

Your school costs at Fordham University will depend on your degree, among many others. For example, studying as an undergraduate student in the Gabelli School of Business will have you paying $2,100.00 per credit, which commonly adds up to about $62,990.00 per year. If you're taking your Master's degree, this will cost you up to $120,784.00 for your entire two-year postgraduate education here. Moreover, these are all on top of other school fees you have to pay, including admission fees, enrollment fees, and housing fees if you choose to stay in the school dorms instead of renting an apartment in New York.

Where is Fordham University in New York City?

As already mentioned, Fordham University's campuses are spread throughout different parts of both New York City and New York State. They include Fordham Village in the Bronx, Lincoln Center in Manhattan, and Harrison in Westchester County. Despite having set up locations in other places, however, the school's main campus remains in Fordham. The village itself is relatively small and has only become known because of the university. Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating part of the Big Apple that's much quieter compared to its central districts. So much so that staying in Fordham, especially on campus, almost feels as if you're no longer in New York City.

Fordham University's Famous Graduates

Part of what has helped Fordham University garner a reputation as a notable business school is its impressive alumni list of prominent figures in the business and finance worlds. Some of the biggest names here include international oil tycoon Eugene Shvidler, Vice chairman and CEO of Burberry Rose Marie Bravo, former chairman and CEO of TD Ameritrade Joe Moglia, CEO of UnitedHealth Group Stephen J Hemsley, and CEO of Empresas Polar Lorenzo Mendoza, among many others. But perhaps the most infamous alumnus Fordham University has ever produced is former President Donald Trump. He remains a controversial figure in both politics and pop culture at large.
