The world's top schools, specifically the most prestigious universities in the US, have gotten a pretty bad rap when it comes to admissions over the years. There's no doubt that these respected institutions provide the highest quality of education out there, but they tend to favor students who come from elite families and rich backgrounds. What about the underprivileged? Don't they deserve proper, high-quality education too? New York City's Baruch College certainly believes that. This beloved school has built a solid, years-long reputation for welcoming under-served students. With their help, these young scholars have gone on to take the world by storm.

History of Baruch College

Since Baruch College is one of CUNY's senior schools, it can traces its origins back to the foundation of the university. First named the Free Academy upon its founding in 1847, the City University of New York became the first higher educational institution that was open and free to the public. In 1919, the university opened its City College School of Business and Civic Administration and it served as the country's biggest business school at the time. However, it was only admitted male students. It wasn't until the 1930s that Baruch College finally opened its doors to women.

What Does Baruch College Look Like?

Baruch College remains on Lexington Avenue where CUNY first opened all those years ago. It boasts big buildings throughout various parts and neighborhoods in New York City, all of which house its various departments. Its Newman Vertical campus, for example, is home to both the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences and the Zicklin School of Business. And though the school is in a fairly dense part of Manhattan, the buildings themselves offer more than enough space for the students and their studies. At the same time, its locations are near subway stations, making it easy for students to commute to and from college.

The Baruch College Student Body

You'd think that because Baruch College is only one school of the bigger City College of New York, it has a small student body. It's true that the institution's number of students is comparatively smaller than that of CUNY, but it's not small at all. The school welcomes close to 20,000 enrollees per year, composed of both new applicants and returning students who have yet to graduate. To break it down even further, this student body consists of around 15,500 undergraduates and about 4,500 postgraduates. The students here are pretty diverse too. They're made up about 39.9% Asian students, 29.8% White students, 19.7% Hispanic students, 11.5% Black students, and 0.1% Native American students.

Baruch College's Best Programs and Courses

Since it was initially built and continues to serve as CUNY's business school, Baruch College's top majors relate to business, finance, economics, and more. The institution offers both Bachelor's Degree and Master's Programs related to Business Administration, American & World Economics, Information Science, Finance, Corporate Communications, and the like. At the same time, Baruch College offers a handful of Humanities courses too. They include Liberal Arts, Journalism, English Literature, History, Philosophy, and even Music. All in all, it's safe to say that Baruch College's diverse array of academic programs make it accessible for all sorts of students and scholars.

Baruch College’s Prerequisites

Is it easy to get into Baruch College? Many would accurately argue that it is. Or at the very least, it's much easier to get into this school than in other, more famous universities in New York City. The school's acceptance rate is 50%, after all, which is much higher compared to other schools of its caliber. Its prerequisites are also pretty standard and relatively managable. For the most part, applicants need at least a high school diploma (for undergraduates) or Bachelor's Degree (for postgraduates) and high standardized test scores. The latter should be at least 1170 to 1360 in the SAT or 26 to 30 in the ACT.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Baruch College?

Baruch College—as well as the entire City College of New York—prides itself as one of the more affordable higher educational institutions in the country. Nevertheless, its tuition fees remain high in the grand scheme of things. Its undergraduate costs, for example, are $3,465.00 per semester for New York resident students and $620.00 per credit for out-of-state and international students. As for postgraduates, the tuition fees cost around $5,545.00 to $8,155.00 per semester for New York resident students and up to $1,110.00 per credit for out-of-state and international students. When you take into account other school fees and the high living costs of New York City into account, you're looking to pay a lot.
