History of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School

The Benjamin Banneker Academic High School was established in 1981. There was already a school in its area in Washington D.C., before that, but the institution was converted to a magnet high school in 1980. The following year, the school officially became the Benjamin Banneker Academic High School. Its namesake, Benjamin Banneker, was an African-American who purchased his own freedom from slavery and went on to become a historic scientist, surveyor, author, and farmer. Today, it follows Banneker's footsteps in letting its students strive and thrive academically, allowing them to reach greater heights and helping them discover their true potential.

Today, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School boasts a big and beautiful campus at 600 9th St NW in a central Washington D.C. neighborhood.
