Having worked in 'progressive' schools, Ely envisioned a school where the curriculum encompasses various organized fields of knowledge, all within a smaller and more intimate environment. Over time, however, The Field School grew to teach about a couple hundred students per year, expanding to become a more standard academic institution in the American capital.
