The District of Columbia International School truly embodies what world-renowned education is all about. For one thing, it's a public charter school, which means it imposes no tuition and students can study here free of charge. Naturally, this allows for more kids, regardless of their background, to have a chance to enroll here. Once they do, they can have the International Baccalaureate (IB) education that many of the top schools in Washington D.C. & beyond provide. At its core, the District of Columbia International School is open to teaching children the value of knowledge and instilling a good sense of globalism.

History of The District of Columbia International School

Having only been founded in 2014, the District of Columbia International School is actually one of the newer schools in the city. It was established to serve as a secondary school with advanced foreign language classes, allowing for young students to learn different languages alongside their standard academics and more. At the same time, this is to help kids who have just moved to Washington D.C. or come from immigrant families to learn English and better assimilate with the American capital's ever-growing international community. Hence, the institution is also a public charter school that's free of charge.

What is The District of Columbia International School's Campus Like?

In 2017, the District of Columbia International School moved to its permanent home in the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center's Delano Building on Main Dr NW. The place is fairly near many of Washington D.C.'s central neighborhoods, as well as some of the more residential districts near the city center. The Delano Building itself is a grand neoclassical building that's big enough to accommodate the school's more than a thousand students. It has enough classrooms for its huge student body, well-equipped science & computer labs, a well-stocked library, and a vast football field outside.

The District of Columbia International School Student Body

As already mentioned, the District of Columbia International School has over 1,200 students per year. They're composed of both new enrollees and those returning who haven't graduated yet. Moreover, the District of Columbia International School takes pride in the fact that it has such a diverse student body. It's one of the many schools in Washington D.C. that doesn't have a majority race. Around 40% of all students here are Black, another 40% are Hispanic, and 15% are White. At the same time, 8.3% of them are English language learners, which means they've either just moved to the city or are kids of immigrant families living in the American capital.

What is The District of Columbia International School's Curriculum?

Don't count the District of Columbia International School out among the elite schools in Washington D.C. just because it's a public charter school. Despite that, the institution remains one of the finest in the American capital. It helps that the school offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) education, specifically from grades 6 to 12. This world-renowned program focuses heavily on academics, guaranteeing that students excel in standard school subjects and are prepared to take on higher education. More often than not, schools that offer IB education have produced countless graduates who went on to study in the world's most prestigious schools, such as the Ivy League colleges or the top universities in London.

Where is The District of Columbia International School in Washington D.C.?

As mentioned previously, the District of Columbia International School is located on Main Dr. NW, right smack in the middle of the city’s various neighborhoods. Notably, this is in D.C.’s northwestern quadrant, famous for the White House, the National Mall, and other historic tourist spots. This makes the area much livelier compared to other parts of the city, but the area where the school is located is on the quieter end of the district. Hence, families can still rent a luxury home in Washington D.C. and live near the school in peace.
