Browne Academy stands out as the first integrated school in Virginia. It was founded in 1941 and initially named the 'Brownie School' and only operated as a preschool. The name then changed to the current 'Browne Academy' in 1975, when the school already had a primary school at the time. In 1986, the school acquired an additional building, which allowed them to integrate a middle school too. And in 1998, they added a lower school to help accommodate more students.
