History of Georgetown University

To say that Georgetown University is historic is an understatement. Georgetown University's early beginnings practically coincide with the founding of the country itself. By the end of the American Revolutionary War, plans for establishing a permanent Catholic educational institution were set and eventually realized. John Carroll, who served as the first Bishop of Baltimore and the first head of the country's Catholic Church, finalized the purchase of property in Georgetown in Washington D.C. on January 23, 1789. It was here that the university was founded and Congressman William Gaston became the school's first-ever student.

What Does Georgetown University Look Like?

Georgetown University is located in the central Washington D.C. neighborhood of the same name, specifically near the city's Downtown Area. The school stands out with its Gothic buildings, each more classic than the next. Its main campus is set along the Potomac River, overlooking Northern Virginia. Healy Hall, the main campus's famous building, is a perfect example of Gothic architecture. Its historical significance is enough for it to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its newer and more modern buildings are right by the Downtown D.C. area. The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is a good example of this.
