History of The Philadelphia School

Caroline Simon and Lynne Berman founded The Philadelphia School on March 1, 1971. Though it was as early as 1970 that the two women saw the need for a new school in Philadelphia. They insisted that there ought to be a school that allows children to develop their abilities and learn independently and at their own pace. Hence, they began work to establish a new academic institution that did exactly that. The first site of the school was donated by Madge and Christopher Donner, who offered 30 acres of their Sycamore Farm to be part of the campus.

What is The Philadelphia School's Campus Like?

Today, The Philadelphia School is located at Lombard Street, which spans various central neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Thanks to its covetable location in the city, it's easy enough for various families to send their kids to school here. Naturally, it helps that the school boasts a lovely and safe campus that's big enough for its student body. Its red-brick buildings filled with all the standard school facilities paired with its lush greenery practically make it look like the dream school for any kid living in a big city. It also helps that it has ample outdoor areas where kids can still play, explore, and more.

The Philadelphia School Student Body

Despite how prominent it is as one of the top schools in Philadelphia and how big its campus is, The Philadelphia School has a surprisingly small student body. The school welcomes a little over 400 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. The fact that it's a private school with an imposed tuition fee may contribute to that. But even with a relatively limited student body, it's still pretty diverse too. Minorities make up around 35.4% of the students, which may not be all that big at first but remains substantial nonetheless.

What is The Philadelphia School's Curriculum?

The Philadelphia School takes pride in the fact that it doesn't follow any famous curriculum. Caroline Simon and Lynne Berman founded the school to specifically incorporate a more progressive educational program and the school has continued this to this day. Since its very first day, The Philadelphia School has focused on letting its students learn and develop independently. They understand not all kids learn and grow the same, hence, each is given enough focus and enough room so they can study at their own pace. At the same time, the little ones are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, from athletics to art.
