History of Julia R. Masterman School

The Julia R. Masterman School was established in September of 1958 and right off the bat, it was already one of the top schools in Philadelphia. It started as an elementary school in its first year, eventually adding a middle school the following year, 1959. By 1976, it had already added a senior high school, making it a go-to academic institution for students who plan on going to college afterward. Additionally, the school was named after Julia Reynolds Masterman, who served as the first president of the Philadelphia Home and School Council. Her family still participates in school events.


What is Julia R. Masterman School's Campus Like?

Today, the Julia R. Masterman School is located along the main street of the Spring Garden, one of the central neighborhoods in Philadelphia. It's housed in a historic building that was once used as the Philadelphia High School for Girls, but the latter has since moved to a new campus on W Olney Avenue. Nevertheless, the famous school building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places under the previous school's name. The campus itself, however, is far more modern now. Apart from the usual facilities such as big classrooms, well-stocked laboratories, and the like, it also has the latest technology that aids in teaching, research, and more.

From what started as a fairly small elementary school, the Julia R. Masterman School is now one of the biggest schools in Philadelphia. The academic institution welcomes around 1,200 students per year, spread across grades 5 to 12. This massive student body is also composed of both new enrollees and returning students who have yet to graduate. At the same time, it's a fairly diverse group of students too. The Julia R. Masterman School is composed of 26.2% White students, 15.9% Asian students, 8.9% Black students, 7.5% Multiracial students, about 0.2% Latino students, and around 0.2% Native American students.

As a college preparatory school, the Julia R. Masterman School follows a rich and well-detailed academic program aimed at helping students excel in various fields. Naturally, this includes the standard subjects like Math, Science, and Social Studies, but it also encourages participation in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Not to mention Enrichment Seminars on topics such as debate, music, architecture, and more. With all that said, the school still encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities too.
