History of The Crefeld School

Progressive education is and has always been at the center of The Crefeld School in Philadelphia. Arnold Greenberg, who used to teach at The Miquon School, founded the school in 1970. Initially named “The Miquon Upper School” in its early days, Greenberg created the school as a response to alumni and the parents of the students of his previous workplace who were looking for a new institution for progressive education. Though the former allowed Greenberg to use “Miquon” in his school, both academic institutions have always been separate from each other.

What is The Crefeld School's Campus Like?

Crefeld School is located on Crefeld Street in Chestnut Hill, one of Philadelphia's central neighborhoods. Since it's an alternative school, it's a fairly small campus that perfectly accommodates its equally small student body. The place even looks more like a classic Victorian home that was turned into a private academy instead of a standard school. Though it looks too small for an academic institution, it still has enough space for all its students and the necessary school facilities. There are big classrooms, well-stocked laboratories, spacious common areas, and even ample outdoor space.

The Crefeld School Student Body

As mentioned previously, Crefeld School has a small student body. The school only welcomes a little over 100 students per year, composed of both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. As such, it's not surprising that the campus is as small as it is, especially compared to the other top schools in Philadelphia. Moreover, this school's small student body is diverse too, with approximately 34% comprised of students of color. Its international students, which include kids who've just moved to Philadelphia, make up a small percentage too but it varies year to year.

What is The Crefeld School's Curriculum?

The Crefeld School was built on a foundation of progressive education, which includes hands-on and experiential learning. “The Crefeld Approach,” as the school calls it, expands on the traditions of progressive education. This includes flexible lesson plans, a strengths-based focus, demonstration of mastery, and embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Here, the student is at the core of teaching. Each kid is given ample attention and time to grow, realize their potential, and the freedom to pursue different endeavors too. Through this, the student will grow more confidently and have a better grasp of the world at large.
