History of Chestnut Hill College
Chestnut Hill College started as “Mount Saint Joseph College,” a four-year, Catholic liberal arts college in
Philadelphia. The Sisters of St. Joseph founded the institution in 1924, becoming one of the first schools in Philadelphia to specifically cater to women. It was renamed “Chestnut Hill College” in 1938 but retained its liberal arts education. By the 1960s, the college added its School of Continuing Studies, leading to the eventual co-ed graduate school in the 1980s. At this point in the school's history, even men were allowed to study and get a master's degree here.
What Does Chestnut Hill College Look Like?
Chestnut Hill College is located on Germantown Avenue in the
central Philadelphia neighborhood of the same name. The campus boasts pretty unique, almost Medieval-style buildings, looking more as if they belong in Europe than what is perhaps the most historic American city in the world. Despite their old-world appeal, these grand school buildings house all the necessary school facilities, including big classrooms, lecture rooms, well-equipped laboratories, state-of-the-art computer laboratories, and more. On top of all that, the campus boasts beautiful school grounds too, offering students more than enough outdoor space for fresh air and sunshine.

The Chestnut Hill College Student Body
Even with an impressive campus, Chestnut Hill College remains one of the smaller higher educational schools in Philadelphia. At least, when it comes to its student body! Today, the college welcomes only over 1,400 students per year, a combination of both new enrollees and those returning who haven't graduated yet. This is a lot compared to the other prestigious colleges and universities in Philadelphia. They commonly have around tens of thousands of students per year. To break this down even further, Chestnut Hill College's annual enrollment consists of around 1,000 undergraduates and over 400 postgraduates.

Chestnut Hill College takes pride in the fact that it was one of the first liberal arts colleges in Philadelphia, especially one founded to specifically teach women. To this day, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences continue to be at the forefront of this school's educational programs. As such, its most popular majors include Human Services, Early Childhood Education & Teaching, Communications, Business Administration & Management, and Psychology. These are also the courses that have produced the biggest number of graduates in recent years. Human Services, for example, produced over 16.9% of graduates in 2022.

What do you need to get accepted into Chestnut Hill College? Firstly, there are the basics. They include your application form, personal essay, resumé (if you have one), letters of recommendation, and the school may also invite you for an interview. You'll also need either school school documents, which include your high school diploma and transcripts if you're applying as an undergraduate or at least a Bachelor's Degree if you're a postgraduate. You'll also need to pass standardized tests and get a score of at least 890 on the SAT or 20 on the ACT.
