History of Thomas Jefferson University

Thomas Jefferson University was founded in 1824. It began as a medical school and produced countless healthcare professionals at the time and over the years. The university also attempted to create a second medical school in Philadelphia, and despite considerable opposition from various University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine alumni, the school partnered with Jefferson College and eventually opened the Medical Department of Jefferson College in Philadelphia. In 2017, the school merged with Philadelphia University too, absorbing its historic art school and textile institute. As such, Thomas Jefferson University's academic programs expanded beyond its initial medical school.

What Does Thomas Jefferson University Look Like?

Despite how historic Thomas Jefferson University is, its campus looks and feels very modern and contemporary. It's safe to say that unlike other historic schools in Philadelphia that still operate today, this one hasn't retained its original buildings. Today, the campus boasts over 52 buildings spread throughout various neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Apart from the usual school facilities, these also include an exhibition gallery, design studios, hospitals, and the famous Paul J. Gutman Library, to name a few. The school also still runs the Philadelphia University Research Center, which includes a restored textile mill that has been around since 1864.

The Thomas Jefferson University Student Body

Thomas Jefferson University is undoubtedly a big school, but it has a considerably smaller student body compared to other universities in Philadelphia. Moreover, Thomas Jefferson University's student body consists of around 3,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. It's one of those relatively unique universities that have comparatively more postgraduates than undergraduates, which makes sense considering that the school also operates as a major research facility.

Thomas Jefferson University's Best Programs and Courses

Thomas Jefferson University specializes in two important and very different fields: medicine and textiles. This is because two big schools merged to become what Thomas Jefferson University is today. There's the university itself, which began as a medical school in the 19th century. To this day, it has retained its medical departments and is even one of the country's leading teaching universities in the field. There's also the former Philadelphia University, which was founded as the Philadelphia Textile School in 1884. From its early days to now, the place has long served as a school and research facility for the textile industry. It also now teaches fashion design and other related disciplines.
