November 22, 2024

It's fair to say that Oakwood School is as “complete” a school as any other, especially among the top schools in Los Angeles. Unlike other academic institutions in the city, which are more focused on preparing students for college, this school is more focused on providing an educational and fulfilling experience for its kids. Sure, academics are still important here, but so is a safe campus, a welcoming community, and various opportunities too. More than just ensuring that your child gets into a good college, enrolling them in Oakwood School guarantees that they'll develop into a more informed and experienced individual.

History of Oakwood School

Jessica and Robert Ryan didn't just co-found Oakwood School in 1951, they opened it in their own backyard. Their home in Los Angeles served as the school's first-ever campus, becoming one of the smallest academic institutions in the city at the time. Eventually, with the help of other local parents—Sidney Harmon & Elizabeth Schappert, Wendy & Ross Cabeen, and Charles & Emilie Haas—they bought and built a new and improved Oakwood School on Moorpark Street. From then on, the institution grew to become a K-12 co-ed independent day school in Los Angeles.

What is Oakwood School's Campus Like?

Today, Oakwood School has two campuses in two different neighborhoods of Los Angeles. The first is the primary school in Studio City and is the newer one of the two. The second is the original campus on Moorpark Street in North Hollywood and it has the secondary school. Both are equally big and have all the standard school facilities, including big classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a massive library, and more. There's even a performing arts building and athletic center, further proving how dedicated the school is to providing a complete educational experience and holistic growth.

The Oakwood School Student Body

From a small group that started in a family's backyard, Oakwood School is now one of the biggest schools in Los Angeles. Especially when it comes to its student body. Today, the school welcomes around 800 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. It's also a diverse student body, with 55.2% White students, 26.8% Multiracial students, 7.1% Black students, 5.3% Asian students, and 5.1% Hispanic Students. Even their gender identity is diverse too! The school's students are 50% female, 49% male, and 1% non-binary. This all just goes to show that every kid is welcome to study here.

What is Oakwood School's Curriculum?

Oakwood School was built on the foundation of providing a holistic and enriching educational experience. All fields—sciences, arts, and humanities—are highlighted here, allowing kids to explore various endeavors and giving them a chance to realize their true potential. This challenges young minds to reach their creative, intellectual, and physical capabilities. Upon reaching 8th grade, students are also given the chance to enroll in the school's Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) elective, which includes after-school and internship programs for various technical industries. This helps them prepare for their futures no matter the endeavor they choose to take on.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Oakwood School?

Is it expensive to send your kids to Oakwood School? Yes, it is! Its primary school, from kindergarten to 6th grade, already costs around $43,780.00 per year. This is just as expensive as the other private, international schools in Los Angeles! Upon reaching secondary school, from 7th to 12th grade, the tuition fee increases to about $52,420.00 per year. This is almost as expensive as going to university altogether. On top of all that, the school imposes additional fees too. There's the one-time application fee ($15.00 per student), the one-time New Student fee ($2,500.00 per student), and student activities fees ($200.00 per student).

Where is Oakwood School in Los Angeles?

As already mentioned, Oakwood School has two campuses—one in Studio City and the other in North Hollywood. Both areas are fairly close to each other and are fairly bustling parts of the city. Though there are residential blocks within these neighborhoods, these places are still integral to the ever-bustling entertainment industry. Hence, they're not exactly the most family-friendly. The residential parts are still nice and have some of the finest luxury homes in Los Angeles, but families with kids are better off living in the suburbs instead. Fortunately, both Studio City and North Hollywood are fairly accessible from other parts of the city.
