Loyola Marymount University is a Jesuit academic institution in Los Angeles, California. It's one of the very few schools of its kind in the country, built upon the principles of the Jesuits, which combined both faith and education in equal measure. Though it's technically a religious school, Loyola Marymount University still gives its students all the freedom in the world to learn, explore, and discover. History of Loyola Marymount University

Loyola Marymount University was first known as St. Vincent's College for Boys, founded in 1865. Initially run by Vincentian Fathers, the school served as the first institution of higher education in Los Angeles and the rest of Southern California. In 1911, the Vincentians had to let go of the school and it was changed into the LA College, continuing its operation as a school for higher learning. From this point on, the school further expanded, becoming more of the prominent college that it is today. It was in the mid-1960s when the school merged with Marymount College, producing the Loyola Marymount University.


What Does Loyola Marymount University Look Like?

Today, Loyola Marymount University enjoys an expansive campus in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles. The school is located in its own area on the Loyola Marymount Drive, encompassing over 40 hectares on the Del Rey Hills. Among its main and original buildings is Xavier Hall, donated by real-estate developer Harry Culver. This served as the space where students were taught and the Jesuit Faculty stayed. The Sacred Heart Chapel is another notable building since it looks like a full-fledged church within a university. It also stands out since it's in the middle of the well-curated school grounds.

The Loyola Marymount University Student Body

Loyola Marymount University may have started as a small school, but it now has one of the biggest student bodies in the city. Today, the school welcomes over 10,000 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. To break this down even further, these students are divided into 7,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates. It's also a diverse student body, with over 39.8% White students, 25.6% Hispanic students, 9.86% Asian students, 7.27% Black students, 6.8% Multiracial students, and 0.059% Native American students.

Loyola Marymount University's best programs are as diverse as its students. There's Psychology, for example, which has produced the biggest number of graduates in recent years. Marketing follows right after, which is proof that the university is widely regarded as a prominent business school. It helps that Finance and Business Administration also produced several graduates over the years. At the same time, Drama, Playwriting, Screenwriting, and Theater Arts are also popular here. They all highlight the different dimensions of the school, which is truly as complex as any other top school in Los Angeles.

Loyola Marymount University’s Prerequisites

With an acceptance rate of around 41.3%, it's not too hard to get into Loyola Marymount University. Nevertheless, you still need to meet their standard and submit their prerequisites. Postgraduate applicants, for example, are required to have at least a Bachelor's Degree and it would help if it's in ant related field of your desired major. In terms of your school transcripts, you'll need at least a 3.3 GPA, which means good grades are a must! And in terms of standardized tests, Loyola Marymount University doesn't require that at all.

Where is Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles?

As already mentioned, Loyola Marymount University is located in Westchester, Los Angeles. Though it's a central district, the area is best known for its many prominent schools, which naturally include LMU. The place maintains a nice balance between its more urban parts and a largely residential district. Hence, it's easy enough to stay near the school. There are many luxury homes to rent in Los Angeles and the ones here are fairly big and more affordable compared to those in the more famous neighborhoods. It's easy enough to get a place that's only within walking distance of the university.

Loyola Marymount University's list of notable alumni is also pretty diverse. The school has produced graduates who went on to become prominent figures in various industries. In Politics, for example, the likes of Tony Coelho (former Democratic congressman), Bob Dornan (former Republican congressman), Kevin Kiley (U.S. Representative from California), and Bill Bogaard (former mayor of Pasadena) studied here. The school also produced countless celebrities, including Colin Hanks, Emma Lockhart, Busy Philipps, Emily Bader, and Scott Eastwood, among many others. And in the business world, there's John Stankey (COO/CEO of AT&T), Wilfred Von der Ahe (co-founder of Vons supermarket chain), and Jerry Grundhofer (former CEO of US Bancorp), to name a few.
