History of California State University, Los Angeles

California State University, Los Angeles was founded on July 2, 1947, through an act of the California legislature. It was initially named the Los Angeles State College and was part of the Los Angeles City College (LACC), a public community college in East Hollywood, Los Angeles. As president of the LACC at the time, P. Victor Peterson also served as the acting president of the state college. The school started with only 136 students, one of the smaller schools in Los Angeles back then, and grew to welcome as many as 2,000 at least two years later.

Today, the California State University, LA is located in the city's State University Drive, itself a central neighborhood of Los Angeles. As the school was founded post-World War II, many of its buildings are designed in the Mid-Century Modern style. From what started as one of the smallest schools in Los Angeles with only 136 students in its early days, California State University, Los Angeles now boasts one of the biggest student bodies in the city. Today, the school welcomes over 24,600 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. To break this down even further, the university has around 21,300 undergraduates and only 3,300 postgraduates. As for its racial demographics, the student body is made up of around 76% Hispanic students, 11% Asian students, 6% International students, 4% White students, 4% Black students, and 1% Multiracial students.

In terms of the school's best majors, you can classify them into two main categories. California State University’s Prerequisites

With an 86.9% acceptance rate, it's safe to say that getting into California State University, Los Angeles is easier compared to other schools. Does this mean just anybody can apply and have a good chance to get admitted here? Not necessarily. The school still has prerequisites applicants need to reach and submit before they'll even be considered to get in. For one thing, you'll need a minimum 3.50 GPA to catch their attention. Fortunately, the school no longer uses standardized tests in determining admission eligibility. Hence, you'll need at least a high school diploma for undergraduate studies or a Bachelor's Degree for postgraduate education.


How Much Does It Cost to Study at California State University, Los Angeles?

Is it expensive to study at California State University, Los Angeles? In the grand scheme of things, especially when you take LA's living costs into account, yes, it is! But it's also considerably less expensive compared to other schools in Los Angeles and beyond. The difference here, however, is that these are prices for at least a three-year program in the school. Where is California State University in Los Angeles?

As already mentioned, the California State University, Los Angeles is located on State University Drive. The school has expanded so much that it's taken up an entire district in the city. Naturally, this means there's also more than enough housing for students who need them. But if you prefer to stay outside, there are still many luxury homes to rent in Los Angeles located nearby. The school buildings expectedly make up most of the area too, but there are still many commercial establishments nearby. At the same time, it's fairly easy to travel to the other central neighborhoods from here


California State University's Famous Graduates

California State University, LA's alumni list may read like a who's who of random prominent figures, but there's no denying that they've impacted their respective fields in very real ways. One of the most notable is Maxine Waters, the US Representative for California's 43rd congressional district. She has held that position since 1991 and has gone viral for her powerful moments in the US Capitol. Billie Jean King, the world's former No. 1 tennis player, also studied and graduated here.
