History of Hollygirt School
Miss Eliza Stevenson, an educator, founded Hollygirt School in 1877 and originally stood at 83 Addison Street in
Nottingham. It's said that the institution got its “Hollygirt” name from its first location, which had a holly hedge. In 1913, the school moved to its permanent home on Elm Street, where it still stands today. It was originally an all-girls school until 2012 when it started to admit boys. A consultation process with all stakeholders in January 2024 resulted in the school deciding to become fully coeducational by September of the same year.

As mentioned previously, Hollygirt School now stands on Elm Street in Mapperley Park, one of the more popular
neighborhoods in Nottingham. Since it's a residential area in northeastern Nottingham, there's enough space here for a complete campus. Hollygirt School boasts classic brick buildings that look more like traditional English homes with standard school facilities. There are spacious classrooms, a lovely library, big common areas, and more. It's also worth noting that the campus has ample outdoor areas, including well-manicured school grounds with beautiful green spaces. Hollygirt School's campus is just right for its student body. Today, the school welcomes a little over 220 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. The ages also range from 3 years old to 18 years old, spread throughout preschool to senior high school. While it's far from the smallest school in Nottingham, Hollygirt School students are still considerably fewer than those from other, equally prominent academic institutions in the city. Despite how it began as a girls' academy, its student gender demographics are 58% boys and 42% girls.
What is Hollygirt School's Curriculum?
Hollygirt School maintains a nice balance between its focus on academics and participation in extracurricular activities. Its three compulsory subjects that all students are required to study are Mathematics, English Language, and English Literature. But it's also worth noting that its Science department is pretty popular too. They teach Biology, Chemistry, Psychics, and Computer Science, among many others.
