ALX School Guide: Trent College

Trent College consistently ranks among the top schools in the UK, even more so in Nottingham. Founded in 1868, it's one of the oldest academic institutions in the country, right up there with the most prestigious universities. Today, this boarding school caters to elite students, which is ironic because it was initially established to serve as a “middle-class alternative” to the more famous public schools that tend to focus more on the privileged class. This shows that high-quality education can truly transform a school into one of the finest institutions.

History of Trent College

British industrialist Francis Wright proposed the foundation of Trent College in 1868. He envisioned a boarding school in Nottingham for middle-class children, offering a more affordable alternative to the more elite public schools at the time. Fortunately, it didn't take long for the establishment of the school to be approved and in April 1868, Trent College officially opened. William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, even laid the foundation stone and to this day, the ties between the school and the Cavendish family remain. It also didn't take long for the school to admit over a hundred students, which was pretty rare at the time.

What is Trent College's Campus Like?

Trent College has remained in its original location on Derby Road in The Park, one of the suburbs of Nottingham. Located west of the city center, it's right at the heart of one of the more affluent neighborhoods of Nottingham. Considering its location near the more rural parts of the city, Trent College boasts a fairly big campus, complete with a famous library, a historic chapel, massive sports fields, and student accommodations. The chapel, in particular, is prominent as it functions as both a place of worship and a venue for various school events.

The Trent College Student Body

Trent College was one of the first schools in Nottingham, possibly even in all of the UK, to admit over a hundred students within a few months of its opening in 1868. Two years later, in 1870, the school had already more than doubled that with over 225 students. Today, Trent College welcomes over 1,000 students per year, including both new enrollees and those who have yet to graduate. It helps that it now operates as a co-ed school, with girls taking up almost 57% of the entire student body. The students are also divided into five houses—Cavendish, Hanbury, Kemp, Owen, and Wright.

What is Trent College's Curriculum?

Trent College's curriculum plays a huge part in helping it stay one of the finest schools in Nottingham. The school has remained committed to helping students achieve academic success, from its high-caliber teachers to its openness to adopt new learning techniques and technology. At the same time, Trent College also maintains a nice balance between encouraging students to focus on academics and participating in extracurricular activities. The school's athletics and arts programs, as well as other departments, are as prominent as the institution's academic performance. Its sports teams, for example, have even become known for their exemplary performances in various leagues.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at Trent College?

Is it expensive to enroll your kids at Trent College? Generally speaking, yes, it is. When you consider how high the living costs in Nottingham are too, you can't deny that the school's tuition fees are pretty pricey. With that said, however, Trent College has remained considerably more affordable than the more elite schools of the UK. Its tuition fees range from £13,547.00 to £13,184.00 per term, far lower than how much other academic institutions of its caliber cost. These numbers include a full boarding fee of £2,000.00 per term, music lessons, language courses, and other extra fees.

Where is Trent College in Nottingham?

As already mentioned, Trent College is located on Derby Road in The Park, Nottingham. Widely considered a suburb of the city, it's also among the most affluent areas in Nottingham. Its residents are some of the wealthiest in the city, living in mansions, manors, and townhouses—namely some of the most luxurious homes in Nottingham. Also worth noting is that The Park is near some of the more rural parts of the city, making it closer to the English countryside than the more urban parts. Hence, it's also easy for families, specifically well-off families, to settle down here.
