History of Nottingham Girls' High School
The Girls' Day School Trust founded the Nottingham Girls' High School on September 14, 1875, becoming one of the first such schools in the UK. Before that, girls had little to no opportunity to get an education, especially children of the working class. Thanks to the work of various feminist reformers at the time, however, institutions like this popped up in
Nottingham, London, and many other cities throughout the country. Upon opening, the school only had 34 students, but when it relocated to Arboretum Street around the same time, it welcomed around 146 girls.
What is Nottingham Girls' High School's Campus Like?
Nottingham Girls' High School is located on Arboretum Street, which isn't too far from the
central neighborhoods of Nottingham. Not only is it near beautiful parks, but the prestigious Nottingham Trent University is nearby too. The campus today is a mix of traditional Victorian buildings and modern structures, embodying the school's foundation of paying reverence to the past while preparing young women for their future. Its main building is so striking and classic that it's become a tourist attraction on its own, especially since it provides beautiful scenery against the famous Arboretum Park right beside it.

The Nottingham Girls' High School Student Body
From what started as a small school of only 34 pupils, Nottingham Girls' High School now has a fairly big student body. Today, the school welcomes around 700 to 800 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who have yet to graduate. Though there are far bigger student bodies among the other schools in Nottingham alone, this number of enrollees proves that Nottingham Girls' High School is undoubtedly one of the UK's largest all-girls schools. Around 280 of them are in junior school, approximately 150 are in the sixth form school, while the rest are spread throughout the nursery, preschool, kindergarten, and primary school.
What is Nottingham Girls' High School's Curriculum?
Nottingham Girls' High School takes pride in its progressive curriculum. Despite how the school is fairly steeped in tradition, it was never one to only focus on certain subjects that the rest of society would usually attribute to femininity. For one thing, the school's core subjects include Biology, Chemistry, English (language), English Literature, Geography, History & Religious Studies, Mathematics, and Physics. Subjects like science and math are just as integral to girls' education as language and literature. The school doesn't even focus much on art and home economics. They're mostly offered as extracurricular activities instead.
